My q6600 runs hot. prime95 is running now realtemp high is 65, speedfan high 70, probe cpu high is 72. Running with a p5q-e, cpu oc'd to 3ghz. 4gb ram, vista 32.

Originally I was using a Zalman 95, swithched to a Thermalright 120 ultra extreme and now running with a Xigamatek S1283. Used AS5, Zalman STG1 & OCZ Freeze. No difference.

The case is ventilated, 2 front 120mm, 1 rear 120mm.

Would a q9450 run any cooler? Would any quad run cooler. I have nothing else to replace at this point.

You could consider undervolting the Q6600. You should be able to run at stock at 1.1v stably. The 45nm quads do use less power, the Q9300 for example uses <50W under full load:

Still, 65C on RealTemp indicates the temperatures aren't dangerous, a bit warm but still some distance between the throttling point.

The only thing is, at least for me, using the same motherboard and cooler, and at the same speed, it runs the same temps ! (all@~3500) I heard that this may be due to the smaller 45 nm core, and its harder to cool.

Now @ stock I am sure is different.

Yes I believe so. All 3 (AS5, STG-1 & OCZ Freeze) have different instructions for application, With all the coolers and grease combinations I have tried, I would think that even if I did a lousy job, one of them would have been ok.

I gotta think it is something else.

BTW, I don't use the stock Ultra 120 mounting, I have DQ6's, and I don;t use a bottom plate, just screws like the Big typhoon. This was I can get more pressues on the HSF, and it makes a BIG difference.

Lap your CPU! Shave off 3C -5C idle and up to 10C at load by lapping your CPU & heatsink. NOTE: This will void your warranty.

Keep undervolting until it can't pass Prime95. Mine can run at 1.16 right now and temps never go over 60 with just an AC Freezer.

What did you use to read that temp? Realtemp or something else? Realtemp reads 5 degrees lower than the other utilities.

I am running P95 now and set the voltage down to 1.2 in the bios, cpu-z is reading 1.17. Realtemp temps haven't gone past 58 yet.
