Hey everyone,

I'm running a MSI bookPC setup, and I wanted to replace my Maxtor drive which is running very hot. So, anyone know which brand of hard drives runs the coolest? Noise isn't as big of an issue...I'd rather have a stable setup than a silent one. :p Thanks!

hmmm, tell you the truth, most run at a decent Temp...

Your best bet would be to get a Hard Drive Cooler... If your running into problems, it probably isn't realated to heat of the HDD...

If your in for a new hard drive, Go Western Digital...

they just popped a new 200giger out today :D Sweeeeeeeet.. ..

Good Luck..

If you go to storagereview.com he puts the temp in his reviews...

For the 800JB (WD 80GB Special Edition) review he has this info..

WD 800JB (SE) 80GB - 15.3C
WD 1200JB (SE) 120GB - 17.1C
Samsung Spinpoint P40 80GB - 17.8C
Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB - 19.3C
IBM Deskstar 120GXP 120GB - 19.8C
WD 1200BB 120GB - 20.0C
Maxtor Diamondback Plus D740X 80GB - 20.5C

Thanks for the info Steel. :)

I would certainly go with a hard drive cooler if I could, but due to case constraints I can't. Here's my case for a better idea of what I'm running: Case

My hard drive sits in the floppy drive bay (right next to a DVD+CDRW drive) since my Radeon AIW is too big in the case. :p

Well what happened was that I was playing War3 and suffered a massive crash...the MBR on the hard drive became corrupted, and upon opening the case the hard drive felt extremely hot...I know that my hard drive runs very warmly (it's an older Maxtor 7200rpm 40GB), but not as hot as it felt then.

I think what I should really do is upgrade my case to a new Shuttle case, but that's for later. :) Any more suggestions on cool running hard drives? Otherwise I'll probably go with a new WD drive. Thanks all for the help.

I guess a laptop hard disk with adapter would be a quiet and cool option too (albet slower than regular drives).

Considering a Hard drive runs basically at room temp I dont think that a great deal of thought about the heat out put of the drive. Be more concerned with the speed of the hard dirve. Now maxtor makes quieter Hard drives with fluid bearings.

A laptop drive unless in a RAID config provides terrible desktop performance. Ive had notebook drives in my desktop and u could really see a difference. ALthough it would be cool to make a silent PC with a notebook drive!

Really? I pulled out my WD 60gig 5400 once after some transferring of files. It was very warm...
