I'm down to either Coolermaster Praetorian or Lian Li PC6077 - which do I choose?

Please respond with feedback on their quality of material, build, finish, etc., and on how they are to work with, etc.

i have the praetorian and all in all i love it. its great looking, doesn't have the front bezels i don't like and is excellent quality. some complained about the optical drive bays not having a seating making it tough to install but i had no problem at all. all components went in very easily, the mobo tray is great and the temps are awesome.

that being said, my next case will have 120mm fans as opposed to the 80mms. i installed a fan controller which definitely helps, but the fans are louder than they should be. don't read that as loud fans, i'm just saying a 120mm fans would be better i think. and the fans they give you are excellent with both 3 and 4 pin connectors.

oh yeah, mine is the brushed aluminum, very nice looking

Coolermaster Praetorian!!! Quality is excellent ( i have black brushed aluminum), 4 fans for cooling (good ventilation, fans have screens), no annoying front bezel, removable mobo tray, clean all throughout.

Both cases are great pretty equal on most fronts, the only obvious difference is the door on the 6070. The Lian-Li will be quieter stock with its lower speed fans and sound deadening material.

I have the 6070 BTW.

My Fiances system is built in a silver 6070, and overall it is a very nice case. I have not physically seen the Coolermaster, but I have owned their cases before, and they are also well built. Things I would point out about the 6070:

The gasket on the pivot side of the front door has a tendency to come loose. I ended up superglueing it on, which seems to be holding for now. When you close the door, it tries to roll the seal off the ledge it is setting on.

You have to open the front door to access the power button. There are posts to transfer the HDD and power lights to the door, but no power button transfer. Only an annoyance if you don't leave it on all of the time.

The case is really quiet, at the cost of retaining heat better than some cases. The front fans have to both draw through a little filter at the bottom of the case, so there is not a lot of air pulled through if you use quiet fans, and if you don't use quiet fans, what's the point of this case.

Can't reverse the door swing. Petty, but it would be nice.

They're both high quality cases.I'm sure you can't go wrong with either one.Personal pick will go to the Preatorian,i like the open whole for the exhaust fan.

I don't understand why people do that. If you search on PC-6077 and read the threads, invariably someone will start talking about the 6070. Not to break Operandi's and Hammerli's balls, but I don't know if people are not paying attention or if they think that because the model numbers are the close that the cases must be close in design. This is not the case. (He he he he.... Sorry). The interesting thing is that the 6070 and the Praetorian are closer in design than either one of them are to the 6077. Not to spend too much time on stuff you didn't ask, but the 6070 follows the design of many of the other 60 series Lian Li cases. There are three separate drive cages. The top one is for 5.25 drives, the second is for 3.5 drives, ususally off set to the left. The bottom one is for hard drives, usually behind a fan/intake. The Praetorian follows this basic design, except that it combinds the external 3.5 and hard drive cages and centers them. The 6077 is a far more flexible case. The front of the case is 9 5.25 drive bays. It has one uniform drive cage that runs from top to bottom. There is a two bay high, 3.5 HD cage that holds three HDs. It has a 80mm fan mounted on the front of it. This cage can be placed anywhere up and down the front of the case. There is a two bay wide bezel that has the power and reset buttons and leds along with two vents. In theory you would keep this in front of the HD cage but it is a separate piece. (Extra HD cages, with a dual bay vent bezel without buttons and leds, can be purchased.) External 3.5 devices are installed by using an adapter tray that fits in one of the 5.25 bays. The device is centered. One of these trays is supplied with the case. And with a silver insert specifically for a floppy drive. (This insert can be removed so the tray can be used for other 3.5 devices.) The case is also supplied with one 5.25 CD drive bezel. It has a spring loaded door and a push button. You install a drive behind the bezel without removing the faceplate or other modification. The button on the bezel hits the button on the drive and the CD drawer automatically pushes the door out of the way. The remaining drive bays (5) have faceplate covers that snap into position.

Both the Praetorian and the 6077 have a top fan and a removable mobo tray. Both have rear installed PSU plates. The Praetorian has one rear 80mm fan. The 6077 has two rear 80mm fan positions, one fan is supplied. The 6077 has a vent in the bottom that has a filter over it. The Praetorian has two 80mm fan positons in the front bottom of the case, where you would put your HDs. I am not sure how many fans it comes with. As described above the 6077 has one 80mm fan per 3 HDs in a cage.

If you haven't guessed by now, I have a 6077. I'll try not to be too much of a fanboy but here is why I like it:

The ability to put anything anywhere in the front.

If I am not going to use a floppy or any other 3.5 external device, I don't have to look at blank 3.5 plates AND the wasted space.

Because the buttons are in the vent bezel, I can move it and the HD cage to the top. I keep my rig on the floor under my desk. This way I can reach the buttons without getting on my hands and knees.

The snap in bay covers were a suprise. I thought they would be crappy but they fit very tight and line up perfectly. Have you every tried to line up a bunch of screw on bay covers?

Parts for all of these bay pieces and other Lian li manufactured parts such as card readers, temp gauges, etc. are readily avalible at many retailers.

The fact that the entire front is just begging for all those 5.25 toys out there. Fan controllers, light controllers, hd coolers, etc. And I am not into water cooling but I think there is a water cooling unit that fits into a couple of 5.25 bays

If I want to make mods to the front of my case for custom buttons or whatever, I just mod one of the 5.25 covers. If I screw it up, just buy another cover for $5, I haven't messed up my case.

While I am not into showing of the inside of my case, I think that this case is an undiscovered modders dream. It doesn't come with a windowed side but one can be purchased. I think the single straight uniform drive cage looks far better than three different ones. Also the entire inside is polished and looks really good.

What I don't like about this case.

The front ports. Under the bottom bay is where the front ports are behind a quite sturdy door. I wish they had put these into a bay adapter. That way you could move it around where you wanted. Or in my case, since I don't use front ports, get rid of it completely. The front would look cleaner without it.

The filters in the vent bezel and the bottom of the case are not to my liking. They are sort of an open mesh plastic. Its too open in my opinion and needs to be tighter to trap more dust. In addition they are an odd size so you cannot replace them with aftermarket fan filters..

The CD bezel doors. With ever one running at least two drives these day, I would have liked to seen the case supplied with two not just one. In addition, you cannot see any drive lights. Apparently, unlike the eject button, position of the drive lights is not standardized. (Antec solves this problem by having a wide led window across the bottom of their CD bezel.)

Hope this helps

On last thing, when you are looking at cases, go to newegg. They usually have several pics of a case, sometimes more than the manufacturer.

Thank you for such an extensive review of the Lian Li. I have one more question, how sturdy (thick) is the aluminum compared to the Praetorian?

I am not sure about the Praetorian. The 6077 is listed as 1.5~2 mm thick. Interestingly the 6077B,(black, not brushed Al), is listed as 1.2~2 mm thick.
