Coolermaster IHC-L71 problem, need some advice

Hi guys,

purchased the Coolermaster ICH-L71 yesterday, together with a nice YS fan. So I removed the stock P4 HSF from Intel and applied the usual thin layer of thermal grease to the CPU. The ICH-L71 is re-using the retention kit from Intel, however you need a bit less force to close it.

Fired up my PC (1.8A@2.4) and got a temperature warning immediately, telling me, my CPU would run at 75C. Hmmm, removed the the HSF again and found out, that the massive base of the HS had nearly no contact with the CPU, I could see that from the prints of the thermal grease on the HS (there was nearly nothing). Ok, I used a bit more grease and then the P4 was running at 60C (load), however this is 7-8 C worse than the standard Intel one and it was only achieved because I used a fvcking lot of grease.

Ok I know, that the good results of the standard P4 fan are partly based on the heavy pressure it puts on the CPU, but the ICH is nearly not touching it (and that is strange). I tried it several times, but I never got good results. The sink is so big, in nearly fills the whole retention kit, so there are not a lot of options to get it closer to the CPU.

Does anybody have some experience with either the ICH-H71 or the L71, the reviews were very good and at the moment I am quite dissapointed with it.

Cheers
Speedy

ok, problem solved. It required some tricky holding and pushing, when bringing the levers of the HS in their final position. Also the new YS fans are a bit larger, than the old models, that made it more difficult. Anyway, it is now working, got the temp of the CPU down, by another 3-5 degrees C.
