I just got this heatsink and it comes with a board header power plug and a 4-pin pass thru power plug. Do I need to hook them both up or just one or the other? The thing didn't come with any instructions and this is the first heatsink I've had that came with two types of connectors. Right now I've got them both hooked up and its working fine, but I don't want to overtax the power supply if I don't need to.

The 4 pin supplies it with the power and the 2 pin just measures the rpm. You can hook up both or just the 4 pin if you don't want rpm monitoring.

Thanks for your answer. I'll just leave them both hooked up so I can monitor the RPMs.

No, I didn't lap it. From what I've read, it seems like people are mixed on how much it really helps. I didn't want to waste the time only to lower my temps 1-2 degrees. Unless in your experience it makes a bigger difference, then I might have to reconsider.

It made a big difference for me, probably 5+ degrees, but the bottoms of mine were *really* rough, you could literally run a fingernail across the miling grooves and get "stuck" on them. When I put AS3 on it and mounted, you could also see where there was not flush contact between the CPU and HSF. Probably the roughest finish I've seen on a HSF.

But, if it does the trick for you temp-wise then I agree, why bother :)

Well, my chip isn't exactly running cool (42 degrees with no load; 49-50 under full load), but it seems to be stable so I wont' bother lapping for now. Maybe when I get some free time thought I'll try it and see what a difference it makes.
