Cooler Master Hyper 212+ temps seem high

I'm running an i7-930 + CM Hyper 212+.

The CPU is OCed at 3.8ghz (Vcore: 1.1875, QPI/DRAM: 1.22500). The Hyper 212+ has a push/pull config using the original stock fan + another 120mm fan I had (i think it's a yate loon)

Idle temp: 43, 40, 43, 39
100% load temp: 72, 70, 68, 67

Those temps seem about 5-8C higher than what I've read online. I've seated the cooler 2x (w/ the 2nd time using a different way of putting AS-5 on) and both times, the temps are roughly the same.

I'm using an Antec 300 case with:
1x 120mm front intake
1x 120mm rear outflow
1x 140mm top outflow

Any comments/advice? I realize those temps are within the specified range per intel, but i dunno, feels like they aren't much better than the stock cooler.

Did you use the proper method of applying thermal paste on hdt coolers? Check benchmarkreviews.com for proper method.

Temps seem fine to me. I wish I could get 3.8 on 1.18v.:( 3.6ghz on 1.22v for me. I'm tired of tweaking it so that's good for now.

I doubt the stock cooler would keep that thing under 90c at that speed.

I used the method where I put the TIM on the metal plates between the heat pipes, and also a small drop on the center of the CPU.

I think I will reseat it once more and test it out. The other problem I'm getting is that I think the cooler is shorting out my mobo (P6X58D-E) since my slot dimm A1 isn't reading any memory.

Oh btw, I'm not 100% stable yet at 1.1875 vcore. I'm probably going to have to bump it up a bit, but w/ my current temps, I was afraid to keep going.

thanks.

yeah, i read that too and that was pretty much how I applied my AS-5.

I am going to try again, but first I need to go buy some plastic washers as some of the mounting bracket studs that came with the hyper 212+ have lost their black ring insulator. I think that is why one of my dimm slots have stopped working. Those studs were causing a short somewhere.

Well I was able to fix one problem, the shorted mobo causing dimm1 to fail. I bought some plastic washers to place between the studs and the surface of the mobo. The ones that were on the studs originally were pretty crappy. They were just black tape or something, and it got removed after adjusting/readjusting the hs/f.

However, my temps are still 44-40-44-40 idle. I guess this is as low as I can get it using the hyper 212+.

Yeah you've hit the 212 wall. I did the same and wasn't happy so I bought a megahalems. World of difference. I have one 120mm fan on mine and with enough tweaking I'm sure I'd have a 4 ghz overclock with 1 medium speed fan. If I were you I'd probably just drop the CPU to 3.5 or 3.6 and call it a day.

what were your temps like w/ the hyper212, and then how much did it drop when you switched to the mega?

I don't remember exact temps but the megahalems ran cooler with 1 120mm fan compared to the 212+ with 2 120mm 3000rpm fans. It's nice having just one quiet fan on that beast and still getting a good overclock. It was at least 7-8c diff. If they both had 1 120mm fan it probably would be 10c diff. Amazon they are $65 free shipping. It also depends on the overclock. The higher the voltages and speeds the more the megahalems will start to pull away.

well jeez that cpu cooler is 60+tax+ship for that much i wonder if there is something better. I checked data looks like 3C max diff for the two coolers (two coolers being core contact freezer 25 shipped vs megahalems) .. might point link of it being way better and id believe. Best part about the megahalems is the retention.

also i think the airflow is a little low but im used to at very least 2x120mm intake i have 4x 120mm intake atm in all cases

A little off topic, but if I disabled HT:

1. Would I lose any performance in gaming? (WoW, SC2, etc)

2. Would prime95/IBT/OCCT run more stable while keeping the same voltages?

Thanks.

Ok so I just turned off HT and ran some Prime95.

idle temps are still the same, but 100% load temps have dropped about 5-8C.

I guess that's pretty good. I would like to have my idle temps lower, but I guess load temps are the important #'s to watch.

Gaming for the most part should be unaffected with ht off- a few titles do get a tiny boost.

for gaming, get rid of HT, keep the turbo boost.

If I'm OCing, do I still need TB? I read that turning off TB when OCing is better for stability since TB can push the multiplier higher than the multiplier that you are stress testing around, causing instability.

Your temps are fine. My rule of thumb is to overclock until I hit 75 degrees at 100% load with Prime95, HT on.
