Cooler for TBird 900...does it really matter that much?

Which one to use I mean. Of course some overclocking will be involved, but does it matter so much which one is used?

Also if you are going to overclock ,some nice 80mm case fans would help keep those temperatures down a little.

Case fan's a requirement either way I think. I think the case I'm ordering comes with one. I'm more concerned with what people think about the need for the high performance Athlon HSF combos, like if the extra few degrees is worth it.

A superorb is very nice as well. I actually got better results from my Superorb than I did from my alpha PAL6035.

Ctowle,

That is either because you have an older non-Socket A Pal heatsink clip, or because of very faulty temp readings.

If core temps were properly read, there is no way a Super Orb beats a socket A clip PAL.

Hmm. Ok, let me narrow this down some then. I realize the various Orbs don't cool as well as other HSF such as Alpha. Since I am definitely buying a TBird 900 and almost definitely the MSI board (K7T is it? bah I don't feel like looking it up right now :)) and the TBird only gets to about what, 990 or so? Please correct me if I'm wrong--especially if it's higher, heheh. The Chrome Orb (which one fits the MSI board, regular or Mini?) can be had for about $20, would this do me well with this combination overclocked? Fwiw, this will be my first AMD computer and I haven't kept up with hardware details for quite some time unfortunately. :( Am kind of regretting that now, heheh. :)

Thanks folks I really appreciate this.

Well, remember that the c-orb is approved only up to 1ghz, so an overclocked chip at 1ghz is really pushing what a c-orb can really handle(even though temp readings will appear fine).

Your best bet will be to get a retail 900, which comes with the taisol cek733092(and it will outperform the c-orb).

Approved you say, since when has that meant anything in the computer world, heheh. :) I'm unable to get a retail chip, only OEM. Can this chip go beyond 1GHz? I thought it was unlikely. Guess the point is I don't really know (hence me asking:)). Heheh.

T-bird 900mhz and up should come with Taisol heatsinks. Some of the older ones did come with Coolermasters(which weren't as good as the taisols).

A 900mhz T-bird definately has a chance of going past 1ghz. Maybe even 1.1 or 1.2ghz wtih good case cooling and some luck ;).

Really? Well that's a pleasant surprise. :) OEM though Mike, they don't come with HSF as far as I know. :( I'm also kind of limited in my HSF choices, sometimes it sucks living in Canada, hehehe.

I fully plan on having at least one case fan sucking fresh air in from the front, of course. Getting the EN7237 which I believe comes with a fan (I'll make sure before I order it of course). How many spots for case fans does it allow? Good case cooling and airflow are very important I believe, I may consider a second case fan if that's needed (or suggested).

OEM's almost never come with heatsinks, so you'll have ot try to find one yourself. :( Sorry.

As far as the ENlight 7237, it has room for 1 intake, 1 exhaust. definately get a second 80mm fan.

That's what I figured. Doesn't really concern me too much though, I'll just find the best one, most of them are around the $20 mark anyways so no biggie. :)

Thanks folks.

Listen to Mikewarrior. He helped me a lot get a great fan setup. If you get the 7237 Enlight definately put a fan in the back as well. I shall try n post my setup showing cost etc breakdown soon incase anyone is interested.
