Since the slk-948u is no longer made or sold I need a cooler that works out of
the box for this cpu. Will the XP-90 or 120 work? The Zalman doesnt seem a good match at all..

The mobile Athlon-64 are 754 chips right.. So any 754 chip cooler should work... Zalman should not have a problem nor the xp-90 and xp-120... See that it can fit in your case and on your motherboard.

*Unless they don't have that heat spreader on them.. then i don't know.. And i have never seen the A64-M in person so can not tell you for sure.

my suggestion is to find out how thick the heat spreader is, then go toa machine show and have them cut you a small peice of copper plating with the right thickness to fill that dead space

The Alpha PAL 8150T will work. I have one on my old CO core 3000+ with the IHS removed. You'll just need to add a small spacer to the screws to add tension. OC'd at 2.4ghz with 1.6v it idles at 35C and loads at 47C with a moderate cfm 80mm fan. There are others I am sure, but this is the only cooler I have experience with other than water with A64's.

he knows the mobiles dont have heatspreaders...thats why he suggested to find a copper piece to occupy the space that the heatspreader would normally take up

as for the xp90 and xp120, yes they work but require modification, you need to sand down the base of the retention bracket so that it sits lower...also it touches the bracket now where the screws are so you have to sand that area down too

if your not precise, then u wont have it seated correctly and will crush your core or not have enough pressure on the cpu or it wont have proper contact...none of which helps stability
