Going to Germany on business and since it is my first visit will couple some vacation time to it as well. Give me some suggestions on things to do! I am a history buff so castles and Roman ruins are great!
Shave the sides of your head. Sing idiotically repetive porcine folk songs while swilling vast quantities of beer. March forth lemming-like on pointless military maneuvers. Eat pig intestines stuffed with cabbage. That should do it.
Try renting a car and driving the along the Rhine river. NOT too far from Bonn i think but you will need at least 1 full day. The Rhine has castles on both sides spaced about 5 miles apart on average. My wife and I loved visiting there...We spend the night in a little town called Bacharat on the west side of the river... cobblestone roads, very old and traditional german buildings, ruined catherdral, castle up above. I think you can even stay in the castle if you got the dough.
If you want ruins and stuff like that there's an awesome museum in Cologne (Köln). Also check out Trier if you have a chance - awesome ruins and an amphitheater (largest one outside of Italy I believe). Too bad you aren't in Bavaria because then you should definitely visit Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau.
You should also check out some of the cathedrals - again in Cologne the cathedral is amazing. Between museums, castles, ruins and churches you should have enough cultural experiences to last you a lifetime
If the weather is good, go south along the Rhein to where it intersects the Mosel. Koblenz is a great area!
I have to second the Stohlwerk Chocolate Factory in Koeln. Best Ameretto, chocolate-covered truffels in the world! I really prefer Germany in the Summer or Winter, but if the weather is warm and people are spending time outside, head up to the Altstadt in Duesseldorf. Great Altbier and bar scene!
That stuff sounds great. I was thinking about Bavaria too. I really love Europe. I have been to Italy and the UK and always come back to the US wanting more!
Hey, I agree with Toolgirl, and I am not from Germany. I have spent at least 4 years there total, though. Yes, don't forget the beer! Germans have the best fries on the planet too. Meine Meinung nach, Sauerbraten ist besser als Schnitzel.
Take a afternoon cruise up the Rine river and see all the sites drink a little wine in the little towns and drink beer and eat bratwurst all the way back at night.
