Cool Scanner! Or is it the software?

Howdy,

Was reading a snippet about a scanner as follows:

The CanoScan 9900F($399) has a "multi-photo" mode that lets you scan several photographs at once. Then scanner will straighten each image and save it as a separate file. As an added bonus this scanner also includes software that will automatically remove dest and scratches and correct photo fading and graininess.
This scanner also includes special adapters so you can scan negatives and slids as well.

So, my question is how much of this is the scanner and how much of it is the software it comes with? I'm very interested in scanning multiple photographs at once on my flatbed and the ability to scan negatives is really cool too. Any idea if I can get some certain software and accomplish the same thing?

That is all done in software. Whether you can get it as a stand-alone app I have no idea. You will have to find out whether it is done in the twain drivers or a retail app.

most ppl just scan in a bunch of photos in high res, crop for each photo, and straighten. programs that allow for macros can do this automatically, after some work. though cropping for each photo requires some edge detection techniques beyond that of straightening. this is obviously all software driven.

Digital ICE by ASF will work wonders...its comprised of Digital ROC which corrects color, Digital SHO which corrects contrast and pulls shadow detail and Digital GEM which reduces grain and can either soften or sharpen images. Its often bundled with higher end scanners (Nikon Coolscan line) and it really does work.

EDIT: You want Digital ICE^3 which comebines Digital ROC, GEM and ICE (removes dust, fingerprints, scratches etc) into one plugin. You can buy SHO separately.

Oh and to scan negatives you just need an adapter for your scanner, most manufactuers provide them as acessories.

Nope, stuff like that usually comes with the scanner software itself. Just put them all on the bed, scan and then seperate in Photoshop.
