Cool Sand Castles! PICS

Amazing. They must use some sort of chemical like alexjohnson said, otherwise that'd be the most frustrating form of art ever.

i was watching Discovery Channel, and what they do is use a jackhammer-esque machine to compress the and 1 or 2 feet at a time into a huge cube like 8 feet tall. They build a scaffold around it and compress it and add water so the sand essentially becomes like clay so it retains its shape while sculpting. They may use a chemical after its completed, I don't know

rules:

1. Old Rule: Maximum of one person in the plot at any time. No substitutions are allowed.
New Rule: A helper may enter the plot to assist with the placing and disassembly of forms.

2. Maximum of 25 hours building. Please see the attached hours of work grid. These start and stop times are not flexible. The scheduled lunch hours and the finishing times on Saturday and Sunday are designed to maximize your social contacts with fellow sculptors. It is your responsibility to decide if all of your available man-hours will be utilized. (i.e. if you want to sleep in, don't expect to make-up your hours by working through your lunch hour).

3. The plot size is 6 metres by 6 metres (approximately 20' square). Materials are sand and lake water only! No decorative material, no artificial colouring, no paints, no flour, sugar, cement, or adhesives may be added. Only sand within your assigned plot may be used.

4. You will be supplied with spray to protect your sculpture after you have finished carving particular elements and as you proceed from the top down. Sculptors are allowed in the plot to spray at any time, and your entire sculpture must be sprayed (unless rain makes spraying impossible) before you can qualify for prizes or appearance money.

5. No powered equipment or machinery is allowed in the plot. Cordless screw guns, etc. may only be used outside the plot. New Rule: An assistant, outside the plot may assemble forms for you.

6. An unlimited number of water buckets may be used. Buckets may be filled prior to the start, but must be set outside the plot. The plot may not be wet down prior to the start.

Special Note - any number of "helpers" may be recruited to haul water to the outside of the plot. No one else is allowed to dump them inside the plot.

7. All forms must be removed prior to judging. No sculptured forms of any kind may be used. All formed sand must be altered by hand. The use of "melon-ballers" over 2" in diameter is prohibited unless the sand is reshaped. All forms must be set outside the plot until the start.

8. You must erect a sign with the title of your piece prior to judging..

The judges decisions are final.

They had a show on tv not too long ago where they randomly exploded one of the sculptures every hour... it was pretty entertaining. Incredible art contest. On the hour, everyone would step back, and at random, one of them just blew up. That team would have to start over.
