A friend of mine is putting up a wireless ISP in east Texas. He hung the gear on top of his #1 tower (in his back yard) today, and had the balls to take pics.

50 miles of range from that ONE tower. He has 2 more that still need the hardware strapped on.

It's not a traditional wireless ISP in that he's building it for people with laptops, he's building it for stationary implementations because they don't have ANY other broadband out there. So he's putting amplified directional antennas on his customers houses that fall just short of needing FCC permits. And it's all built on hacked up off-the-shelf consumer equipment 😛

He doesn't intend to make much money off it, that's what his old dialup customers are for. He just wants some damn broadband at his house (which happens to be where he dragged 50mb out to feed this beast, the other towers are going to be set up P2P to save money.

Crap all the directional ones look the same!! I guess that's Texas. Say, are there ever any good thunderstorms there?

Yep, and that was one of his major design concerns. Basically just decided that if lightning wants to skullfvck his hardware, it's going to, and just isolated everything from the tower itself so it's not in an OBVIOUS route to ground.

OK, so after looking in all directions..

I conclude that he will have about 10 customers.

😛

Heh...

There are many parts of Texas where you can drive for quite a while and only see a few signs of life....😛

(I'm glad I don't live in one of those parts 😛)

🙁 I wish it was green here... stupid snow.

Wow, that's beautiful country. When I was in Dallas Taxas, all I saw was flat land and yellow grass. I just figured most the state was like that. 😛

Not nearly as flat as in Dallas!

He better have the proper lighting and support for those towers.
It is a serious game he is playing.

Has he told his insurance company about this project yet?
