Cool *PICS* from a vicious flip at yesterday's NASCAR Talladega race

That was insane, i couldn't believe Mike survived that.

On the Trackpass note, i remember when TNT had the races and streamed live in-car camera feeds over the net for free, aahh those where the days 🙂

FYI: RoadRunner customers get Trackpass for free

I thought the flip-up panels on the roof were supposed to prevent this kind of thing?😕

The panels flip up when the car is going backwards. In this flip, the air caught the car when it was sideways, so the panels didn't go up. I guess they will need to come up with something for this now.

About the roof flaps:

Thge car took off when it was sideways, the flaps only really help when the car is very much in a rear end forward situation (which helps 90% of the time). He was airborne before the flaps could activate, and one DID open, but it was already too late to have any effect.

Ah...I see. I didn't watch the race so assumed the car was going backwards when it went ballistic.

Yes, I remember. I do have Roadrunner, so I get the free trackpass at home. However, you only have access to it by virtue of being on their WAN. You get no login to access it from other networks (I am at work right now 🙁 )

I've been to Talladega to see some races there before. Very cool place to see NASCAR. And the partying before the races in the camp grounds is insane.

That was a hell of a wreck. And the amazing thing is as soon as the car stopped you were able to see him take off the steering wheel and start getting out of the car.

The new rules implemented yesterday didn't do much to break up the pack.

Tom

They weren't meant to break the pack up. The 13 gallon fuel cell was supposed to do that. The new changes to the cars for yesterday's race were supposed to make passing easier.

Yeah...freaked out when I saw that happen. Elliott didn't have to swerve much to the right. Dale Jr., to me, didn't look like he was trying to block anybody but more like get in line behind Waltrip, his teammate. But, he did and made contact with the guy behind him and that sent him sideways and then up in the air and flipping a total of *6* times! When he came down squarely on top of the roof I thought that roof would collapse for sure but the A and C pillars held up very well!!

That was a very nasty wreck. I was watching the race and I was thinking "Hey, I shouldn't be able to see the underside of the car..." Then I realized what was happening because he lifted off of the ground so fast.

I was amazed that the driver came out of that crash yesterday as well as he did. Very scary wreck indeed.

And yes, I'm a NASCAR fan so your numbers are growing just a little. 😉

I was really scared when I saw the wreck happen. I thought for sure that he was hurt badly.

Is it true that people watch races for the wrecks? Do you guys think the wrecks are "cool?" The NBC commentators sounded like they were eagerly waiting for the Big Wreck--I wonder if they were disappointed that it didn't happen.

The funny thing is the Big One didn't really occur until after the race when Bobby Labonte spun after everybody took the checker flag. When I first started watching NASCAR, I only really cared for the wrecks but then I became more interested in the strategy and the close battles between the cars... which is why I don't like it when Ryan Newman takes the lead. He usually gets ahead by about 2-5 seconds before a caution flies... makes for boring racing.

I looked out my window, and saw Kyle Petty's car upside down, then I thought "one of us is in real trouble".
