Cool n' Quiet?

How does this thing work? Do I just go to the start menu, ASUS, and click on the Cool n' Quiet executable and it's up and running?

All I see is a CPU frequency (2Ghz) and CPU voltage meter (1.3750V) with a choice to minimize and close. Is that all there is to it?

What exactly does it do?

Cool n' Quiet is an AMD specific thing you can anable in your bios and run from the supplied software that will underclock your CPU when you are idling or doing things that don't fully load the CPU, so that it uses less energy and produces less heat, but will clock it back up again when you are under load so that it can handle it. As I said you need to make sure it is enabled in your bios, and then you should just run the app from windows. Nor sure about the specifics, but on my MSI I know I can turn it on and off through corecell.

That "app" you?re referring to doesn?t do anything aside from show the state of the CPU. To enable Cool n' Quiet you have to enable it in the BIOS, download the CPU driver from AMD and set your power management in windows to "minimal" in windows. To make sure its working I monitor the system with CPU-Z, voltage should drop to 1.0 and the clock to 1.0GHZ. Also be aware many S754 systems won't able to use Cool n' Quiet with more then 1 DIMM installed.

It is a socket 939. I think I have the driver from AMD. Cool & Quiet is set to Auto in BIOS; the only option besides Off.

I can't search for "Power Management" (stupid foreign language OS), where do I set that?

on my asus, you have to go to advanced> cpu config>cool and quiet> and set to enabled. then go to power> and set ACPI 2.0 support to 'yes' then save boot up into windows. go to control panel, display, screen saver, and power. set power schemes to minimal power management.

cool and quiet just lowers the multiplier when the cpu isnt under load, it also turns down the voltage. i wouldnt use it if you overclock.

I do not overclock as of now.

EDIT: I did what you said and now it's 1000Mhz and 1.0750 volts. Thanks.

But will it have any performance hit in games or other things? Like, being 'slow-started' when it's time to go all-out?

I use Cool 'n Quiet, and it's never stuffed me up. I've never had it slow down a game on me, although I do turn it off when playing multiplayer (My brother wouldn't believe me if I said the only reason he killed me was because my comp froze). 🙂

Not true, the "app" I am referring to give you the ability to turn it on and off through windows. As you will notice I already told him to turn it on in the BIOS. It also gives you the ability, at least on the MSI boards with corecell to choose how much to under clock it.

when i first got my comp i used it, there was a weird problem with the driver, so after a while it would get locked at 1000. thats when i turned it off, but i could've just updated the driver since it was a well known problem. i am not going to use it now that i overclock.
