Cool n Quiet

Hi. I recently installed the AMD CPU driver to enable cool n quiet to fully work on my PC. and yes it did. it downclocked my a64 to 50% clock. and my temps were 31C but when I ran CPU intensive tasks, my CPU was "stuck" at 50% (it never got back to full speed). I tried everything i can to task the CPU but it still stayed at 50% speed (though temps were fantastic at 36C with load).

I read something in the intallation that this was a "known" issue. So i want to ask, is there a way to make cool n quiet work right? they has a link saying SP2 included the fix to this issue but i am running SP2 already. I uninstalled the driver, now I am 100% speed again, but I wanted CnQ to work since the temps and power savings were great.

Thanks to anyone who could help.

BIOS settings:
power mgmt: min powersavings
CnQ: enabled
System in sig.

it works properly for me. I do benchmarks with CnQ on or off and I get the exact same scores.
So you downloaded the Athlon 64 drivers and put your power to "Minimal Power Management" right?

Nope. I've tried it with default settings. and it didn't work either. even if you OC, it should be able to adjust the multiplier. my default multi is x10 and with CnQ it got stuck at x5.

Can updating your BIOS help? Maybe due to Windows compatibility & power settings issue.

Turn it off. It's garbage anyway. I've calculated between a 1-4 second delay before it "decides" to bump up to full speed.

I would do a CPU burn test under full load, and have the cool n quiet box open at the same time so that you can look at the speed. Maybe it is working properly, but youre computer is never needing to use full power

You should check the memory ratios. I think "on the fly" clock speed changes don't change the memory ratios which can cause problems.

I just reinstalled windows after getting a scsi drive and this exact thing happened to me. I was noticing my DVD rips were taking all night and couldn't figure it out. So, I ran the little ASUS utility showing the CPU speed and ran Prime95 and it was still stuck at 1000mhz. This is after about 7 months with my old install where it worked just fine and kept it nice and cool. I even went to the AMD site and downloaded the newest driver and still the same issue. So, I just had to turn the damn thing off.

I just installed cool and quiet on a ASUS a8N-SLI v1004.001 and amd64 3000+ @2.511Ghz

I read the manual: its says install the amd driver and asus program before you enable the CnQ in bios and power management features. So i did. When I went to apply the minimal power management setting in windows it instantly rebooted my computer. I was freaked but it rebooted fine and everything is working as it shoudl be.

The utility however reports things wrong. It says i idle at 1Ghz and 1.8Ghz at full.

I confirmed this by running cpu-id and 3dmark05. my idle is 1395Mhz and my load is 2511Mhz (279x9). There is no slow down from using CnQ. It works well.

My idle temp is about 32 C my load is about 52C
my old idle temp was 42-45 C

This is a very large improvement I think and was worth the trouble.

The only thing CnQ does is change voltage and change cpu multiplier.

I highly recommend you install it. If it doesnt work, uninstall it. Simple as that, there is no penalty for trying.
