Yeah. I think this is kind of important!
I have Cool n Quiet turned on, A64 3200+ and K8N Neo Platinum (skt754).
So it seems to work well, clock speed drops to 1ghz, fan spins down to around 1700rpm, and temps drop to the mid 30's idle.

But then when I do something requiring CPU power, the clock speed increases back fine, but the fan doesn't seem to spin up...leading to the CPU getting to temps in the 60's. (at least. the temp sensor on my case starts to flash 60C, and the probe is in the heatsink fins. I'd expect the CPU to be hotter than that)

If I open up core center, it will turn the fans on high blast to get the temps back down, but otherwise...??
Do I need to have core center running so the fan will adjust?

fisheye,

What you need to do is go into the BIOS settings and enable the "Smart CPU Fan Target" under the "H/W Monitor" option. There are several target temperatures that can be selected - 4 if I remember correctly. The basic theory is that the CPU fan will come on or go off when the CPU reaches the set temperature.

There is also another option called "Smart CPU Fan Tolerance" which appears directly under the "Smart CPU Fan Target" option (again, this is found under the "H/W Monitor" option). From here you can set a tolerance from 1 to 5 where the CPU fan will come on or go off once the CPU temp gets within the "Smart CPU Fan Target" tolerance you specified.

For instance, if you set the Smart CPU Fan Target to 40C and you set the Smart CPU Fan Tolerance to 5 degrees C, the fan will come on and stay on until the CPU temp drops to below 45C. It is supposed to work both plus or minus (so theoretically the fan could come on at 35C but mine never does).

With "Cool N' Quiet" enabled my CPU idle can drop as low as 21C (when the system IS TOTALLY idle, doing absolutely nothing). Otherwise the idle is between 27-39C. Under heavy load like playing Halo for several hours my CPU temps can get up to high 60s'. And that CPU does get a workout. See my sig for system specs.

Hope this helps.
