Hi all,

I didn't know where to put this, so I figured off-topic would be the best place to start. I found these LED light-up slippers through a friend and promised I'd pass on the information. You can find their main website at http://www.*****
Basically, these are comfy slippers in cool character designs with the neatest part being that the eyes light up with super-bright LEDs. You can check them out in action here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=zmrC4RQNovs

Now one of the reasons I promised to pass the information on is that 100% of the profit goes to families caring for children with cancer. The inventor has a website specifically dedicated to this topic at http://www.***** with all the information about why he started it and what he plans on doing.

Let me apologize in advance to all who might think I'm spamming or even if this kinda thing doesn't belong here at all (i thought anandtech would be a cool place for it as it is a neat, useful gadget). But in the event you are curious or need to shop for Christmas gifts still, check it out and you won't be disappointed.

Moderator's Note: I decided to lock this thread. I found it rather suspicious that several message boards have been hit by the same type of message - from new members who just happened to have discovered this charitable organization, and decided to sign up at some forum so they can post about it. When any organization, be it for profit or not for profit, decides to advertise itself in this manner, it's SPAM.

Not lost on me was ShinyBoxORocks who coincidentally signed up just to add to the conversation. See: thread at geek dot com and you'll see the pattern. Daniweb had a thread that google found, but that thread has since been deleted. topix dot com has another thread... new member, pointing out this charity, followed by another new member with a link to the youtube video. Yet another coincidence: EHermanson and ShinyBoxORocks were using the same IP address. Kinda funny, huh?

I don't see any places that verify this is truly a charitable organization. This company does not appear to be the manufacturer of these slippers (global whos who lists them as a consulting firm
In my personal opinion, if I needed consulting work done, I wouldn't pick a company that was relying on advertising in this manner.

Too late my fine-feathered friend! :p

Negative. OP has changed avatar to the doctor icon, therefore, he has full authoritative power.

Marked. Don't know how effective they would be in the dark, but would make a good gift.

That's what I was thinking. The video clip on youtube doesn't really show how well they light up (and a pair of eyes floating and walking towards me in the night would scare the heck outta me). Guess I'll find out when my pair gets here, going to give my cat a heart attack :)

Yep, those are them. They have a myspace page at myspace.com/seelippers with more information and what have you. The pair I've got (I picked up a pair of the car ones) can light up a decent path in front of me at night. I turn them off during the day so I don't waste my batteries. I mean, I wouldn't use them to walk around a pitch-black forest at night but for simple trips to the bathroom, they're great.

If you want to help sick kids, there's at least one way to do it directly and be sure that 100% of your money goes to them ;)

You don't get slippers from it though :(

You know, I thought the same thing in regards to the website http://www.freerice.com, wherein you play a vocabulary game where every correct answer donates 10 grains of rice to world hunger. Why don't they just buy bushels of rice and give it away without making me practice my vocabulary? Their answer is similar: they generate revenue from the sponsors that appear on the site during the game. Without the sale of the slippers there wouldn't be much money to donate. Figure a pair costs roughly $20 or so to make, and sells for $39 adult, $29 kids sizes--that's roughly, $10 to $20 profit that goes to the cause with the rest being used to produce another pair.

In this manner, the nature of donation is cyclical. The amount given is only limited by the amount sold. It's kinda like a bigger version of the Lance Armstrong bracelets but, you know, with slippers.

Ohh they have an on/off switch? I figured they just turned on when you stepped into them. Kinda a hastle IMO.

No, they do shut off when you stop moving. The lights fade on when there is movement and stay on, then after a few seconds of inactivity, they fade off. The on/off switch is just for daytime use since there is no reason to really have them come on at all during the day. Unless you're into that sort of thing...

 and you'd have enough left over from not buying $39 slippers to buy Super Mario 64 DS for a children's hospital.

Do it soon, the mods' matching money is going unclaimed :(
