Check out the pic

A Japanese scientist has developed a coat which appears to make the wearer invisible.

The illusion was part of a demonstration of optical camouflage technology at Tokyo University.

It is the brainchild of Professor Susumu Tachi who is in the early stage of research he hopes will eventually make camouflaged objects virtually transparent.

The photograph was taken through a viewfinder that uses a combination of moving images taken behind the wearer to give a transparent effect.

It's hoped the technology will be useful for surgeons frustrated their own hands and surgical tools can block their view of operations and pilots who wish cockpit floors were transparent for landings.

this is crazy, how does this work?

call me a noob but based on a simple knowledge that transparency is only possible when it is penetrated by light, how does this work?

I like how the article says it may be used for medical or airplane related activities but you know the military's interested. They would looove to have all their soldiers walking around Predator style....

Ok, so they invented a cloak of invisibility. Now, when are they going to invent the +1 Mace?

No kidding. I'm sure higher ups in various Defense Depts of various countries have considered "donating" a dollar or two to this project.......

How do you make the worlds best military better? Make it invisible! :D

I remember seeing a show on the Discovery channel a few years ago where they showed a whole tank covered in fiber optics... you could see through the damned thing and could only see a minor distortion from semi-upclose. Of course that was all done with computer for the show, but obviously that means it's nothing new.

umm you dont see that stuff with you eyes like that (or do you)

The photograph was taken through a viewfinder that uses a combination of moving images taken behind the wearer to give a transparent effect.

Exactly what I was going to post

seems like more of a camera trick then invisible cloak.

If I remember on how it was done in other projects, I think it's basically video images taken from the other side of the object, which is projected through optic fibres onto the near side. In a flat 2d kinda way it appears invisible, but not from all angles....yet :)

the coat has to be a specific color and have a specific reflectivity (I belive it is a silver coat).

The camera is more or less generic, the system just overlays the image from the camera where ever the silver color appears (like a blue screen). The Head-Mounted Projector is where a lot of work went to.
