About a month ago, I was helping my church clean some stuff up and I discovered a 'like new' Roland TD-8 electronic drum kit. Unlike a lot of cheap "toy" kits, this one is actually a pretty serious kit. They go for about $1400, used, on ebay. I've done a lot for the church so the music director let me have it for $200 down, and $600 in payments that I could pay "whenever".

Here's a video on youtube of a guy playing to a god smack song.. not my favorite song but it's a decent recording.

I also just picked up a new Presonus Studio Channel Tube Preamp

Holy crap this makes stuff sound nice. It really warms things up, and the compression is really gentle and effective.

This mix is my friend Tim on the drums. I ran the Roland td-8 directly into my sound card. I then played a bassline, with teh bass hooked up through the Presonus Studio Channel Preamp.

The guitar is done via a Line6 Spyder Amp, of which I ran the line out into the Presonus, then into my PC.

I didn't spend a whole lot of time mixing it up, this was just a goof off session. I really like a couple of the riffs though. I kept it simple. Tim goofs a few fills, but it's w/e. This wasn't serious business.

I think the theme that comes in around 2:30 mark is pretty nice. Especially when the 2nd guitar plays the dirty melody. I really think I might turn this into an actual song.

I'm no perfect critic but since you posted here...

The guitar in the beginning gets you pumped for something a little more upbeat and then you have some slow drums coming in. I'd either slow up the riff or speed up the drums. I'd prefer speed up the drums or toss a few extra beats in there.

On 2nd listen the drums may just be too quiet. Dunno hard to tell.

That's an older mix.. I think the drums are higher, but overall it's not eq'd as well (at least I think so).

Well, here's how we recorded it.

I first played a song that Tim knew how to drum to. He listened to it, and I told him just to play freely using the song as inspiration. We did this a few times, then I recorded him playing it standalone (so he didn't have to worry about following the song). The song was "in the meantime" by spacehog.

I then recorded a completely improv bassline. Since I wanted to be able to rock out on guitar without having to think to much, I kept the bassline pretty focused on E.. Song is in E minor.

Then I just recorded guitar to it.

It's really just made up, no real song structure or anything though out.

So considering it drew you into to be that analytic about it, makes me think it came off better than I expected.

With how I recorded the drums, i simply captured via "line in" the output of the drums from a single stereo channel. Unfortunately, I can't adjust the individual drums after that. Ideally, I will record future sessions in midi.

The beginning on this sounds much better IMO. But then the drums die off. I don't get it.

I'm only analytic since you sound serious about it, otherwise I wouldn't care to post. It has potential for sure.

lol.. i played bass and guitar. like i said.. i jammed the bass first, kept it in E.

Then I jammed guitar.. so no.. they aren't really in sync.. just in key and following the same drums.

Well I don't hate it, so I guess that's a compliment?

Really shitty sound @work, not sure if it's cuz I'm streaming the MP3 or if it's just recorded that way. Too hard to tell.

I'm 2 minutes in, which is a lot more than I give most ATOT listens.

it's probably a touchy mix.. i spent just a few minutes getting it to sound good in my headphones.. who knows how that is going to relate to any other speakers. yes, it's a compressed mp3 so there was some loss.

Ah. Sounds good otherwise. Is the guitar a mic'd amp or computer modeler?

mmmmm..

neither.

I have a line 6 Spyder 2x10, but I used the line out jack on it to send the signal to my Presonus studio pre-amp. I applied some eq/compression and tube gain on it.. then fed that into the line In jack on my computer.
