Cool it in cooking oil

Would you like fries with that?

If they were smart cookies, they'd have used mineral oil - never have to worry about it going bad, or your motherboard smelling like french fries.

Pretty cool stuff, though. Someday when I have the time/money/space I plan on giving passive immersion cooling a go, just for fun.

The special order transformer fluid looks like it would be cooler... also, putting in a submersible pump with jets around the cpu and vga would be cool...

My friend actually did this with vegetable oil and his comp has been running for little over a year with no problems :p

This is with an old crappy comp. mind you. ;)

Vegetable oil goes rancid - I hope he preservatized his cooking oil with THBQ or BHT...

No thanks. Just for the sheer fact of swapping out hardware would be so messy...

This is one of those somewhat cool but absolutely impractical things. Right up there with the casefancasefancasefancase

In the article they did reccomend motor oil instead of cooking oil. Suszterpatt summed it up best. Cool but impractical.

How do they cool the cooking oil? With an H2O cooling setup, you have a radiator to cool the water. Eventually in this setup, the 8 gallons of cooking oil will become saturated with heat and will no longer provide any cooling.

not a very good article. seems rushed. also hate the new thing where they split a damned article into way too many @%# pages.
