Cool Hidden Feature at Yahoo Maps!

I remember a thread about finding the Lat. and Long. cords. of a address, or about finding an address based on the cords.

Well, looking at the yahoo maps query string, the lat. and long. cords are in it!

Typing in the address for the white house it will take you to it, but if you click on the point where the white house is on the map, you get this querystring:

http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Ds...n&state=DC&csz=Washington,+DC+20502-0001&slt=38.898563&sln=-77.037123&zip=20502-0001&country=us&mag=9&cs=9&BFClient=&BFKey=&poi=&poititle=&map.x=209&map.y=243

The site mentioned in the other thread would let you find the cords of an address only a certain number of times before you had to pay for it. That's why I'm only mentioning it now.

There could be free sites that allow you to do this, but I still thought it was swell. 😛

Hmm. targeting the White House, are ya?

you can also go to terraserver and use the Advanced Find and locate an address and then click the Info link above the image and it will overlay long/lat.

Another useful link:

How Far Is It

okay I see the coordinates in the URL in decimal format. how do I change it to degrees and minutes?

This is pretty bad ass. I need to get my apt's lat and long.

Yeah...I got into finding some of the lat/long conversion tools and distance finders when I started some TV DXing last year. Plus you can use software like Topo USA and plug in your lat/long and check out the terrain in your area or where you want to go.

I believe the coordinates are the most current available (NAD88)
