If there are any pilot gurus in here, do you need a certain rating to be able to land those runways?

no but certain runways have certain guidelines...IE at st. maarten if you arent able to see the runway at 3miles(not sure) out you have to go around due to mountains proceeding the airport

I don't know much about the civilian side, but I imagine they're just instrument rated commercial pilots. No 'special' rating would be necessary in those conditions (i.e. ceiling and visibility).

Rating, no. Skill, yes.

You read my freaking mind from a week ago.

I was browsing around and wished there was a decent compilation of crosswind videos. Truth be told, jet engines give me a boner.

Also, if no one has made a treadmill reference before I post this, I am surprised, and I am not making said reference right now.

edit: OK, got through all of the videos, and I have to ask: do you have to present some sort of certificate of retardation to comment on youtube videos?

Reminds me of landing in Cheyenne, WY (no, not 747s) where the most one can hope for is that the plane is more less parallel to the ground the moment the wheels touch because the plane bounces around the whole way down.

This pilot has mad landing skills

Seemed relatively calm, yet he touched down at an angle. Puts horrible amounts of strain on the undercarriage.

747s - because of the very shallow bank angle allowed near the ground (engines 1 and 4 will hit) are designed to land in up to a 45 degree crab. They'll be ok. :)

Did that 747 clip the top of the runway fence with the landing gear in the first video? It looked close!

To add to this, I believe the B52's undercarriage even rotates to accommodate the tracking relative to the ground during a crab. It's quite amazing how much damage airplanes are designed to withstand.

Those pilots are all Airline Transport Pilot ( ATP ), type rated in the make/model.
The runway itself does not have any special requirements.
I noticed the Tegu Honduras landing, the pilot busted the displaced threshold by a few yards. I suppose I'd be tempted to do so myself, with that plane on that short a runway:)

Cross Wind landings are insane, one of the most challenging landings a pilot can experience.

I like the one where the pilot says screw it and decides to come around for another run. The sound of those engines going to full power is tits.

I had one go-around on that trip in Sept-Oct this year. A pilot in training sorta dawdled on the runway a bit too long. No big deal, a pilot should practice them once and a while:)
Buffalo NY had the best crosswinds, both for the landing and the takeoff the next day. For the takeoff it was 22 knots gusting 28, between 30 and 60 degres off runway heading. Wheee!
