Cool. A 1% raise out of the blue.

Just got an email stating that the "locality pay" adjustment to the federal scale for Atlanta just got bumped an additional 1% for 2003 as of our next paychecks. It's not much, but I'm not bitching either. I guess someone finally figured out that Atlanta isn't exactly a cheap place to live. ;)

Yeah....like 5 min ago.

whoops, meant to phrase that "didn't you just get a raise"
Like a month ago or something...?
Yeah, I get a cost-of-living bump and a within-grade bump every year unless my performance evals were really bad (they're not). This was some kind of afterthought with regard to adressing the increasing cost of living here, I guess. The base pay for federal employees is adjusted up in cities like Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, etc since housing and other stuff is more expensive. I'd make almost $2,000 more per year if I lived in Chicago or NYC for example.

Bah. Live with the light-beer-loving, meat-market-patronizing morons, you mean. I will never live there. Decatur's getting pretty yuppified, but it's still a much more "locals" place to live than Buckethead.

Damn... we're getting 3% raises at our company and I was complaining... because my fiance gets near 10% each of the last 2 years. Yes, that's a raise, not a bonus. 1% is chump change divided by 52 weeks.

No complaints... must remember... no complaints. :|

Move to Sacramento then, we have bike lanes.

Maybe someday. Right now I'm hesitant to leave a very secure job with good benefits (that I actually like for the most part) given the overall market.

In the two annual reviews i've had, i've gotten the max raise i can get. 10%. that may seem like a lot, but when you don't make any money in the first place, it isn't much.

No CDC offices here? I could probably move to GA and stay with the USGS if I really wanted to.

What's a locality pay? Is it the variable in pay that depends on where you work? I work for the state gov't in Sacramento and taking a 25% pay cut after being laid off from the IT private sector.

The federal gov't has pay grades. These are adjusted based on where you live. I, being in sacramento make about 13% more than base pay. In atlanta, it's about 10%. It's probably more in San Francisco. It's basically just a cost of living adjustment for region.

Pretty much. They'll adjust the pay scale for everyone depending on the relative cost of living in the city you're in. So a GS-9 in Chicago makes slightly more than a GS-9 in Atlanta since Chicago is a more expensive place to live.

The various pay tables by location are all here.

We don't have any big offices there. The big ones are Atlanta (the main offices), West VA, WA, MD, NC, and PA. I'd have to look into positions with state public health agncies if I wanted to move somewhere else.
