What would the food taste like (french fries, for example) if the fryer barrel was filled with pure synthetic lubricating oil like QuinSyn-F?

Sounds like those are made to be chased down with a needled beer. :)

I'm going to have to try this. Perhaps with fish fillets first. ;)

I would highly recommend against this, as much as using wesson for your next oil change:)

Oh wait, I guess you don't drive much on a cruise ship

QuinSyn-F: QuinSyn-F is a custom-blended foodgrade
polyalphaolefin (PAO) synthetic hydrocarbon
fluid with improved lubrication at high and low
temperatures, reduced volatility, and compatibility
with mineral oils and equipment designed for use
with mineral oils. USDA authorizes QuinSyn-F for
use in federally inspected meat and poultry plants
(H-1). It also complies with FDA 21 CFR 178.3570 -
Lubricants with Incidental Food Contact.

Incidental Food Contact means:

they are used on food-contact surfaces, on bearings and gears located on or within food-contact surfaces, or on bearings and gears that are located so that lubricants may leak, drip or be forced into food or onto food-contact surfaces.

Does NOT mean you can cook with it. But buy all means, go ahead, make some fries.

I got dibs on your assets and estate. :D

Actually it's used in the compressors which supply compressed air to the galley equipment.

But the question remains on taste.

Taste the oil. The food will have this taste.

Even if it seems to have no taste, I wouldn't use it. It is a lubricating oil and is not meant for human consumption period. Although it might make you quite regular:)

Damn Fobot beat me to it.

We're not allowed to discuss the brown word aka no. 2. ;)

But it makes a really nice geiger counter popping noise when irradiated with 10 watts of 532 - beam perpendicular to surface and about 1 mm diameter. Smoke is sweet like the red berries in Capt Crunch Berries. :D

Nail polish makes a popping like the original 10k cheetah running on a 32mb nt server but the smoke is fairly obnoxious.

In any case I'd have to see something fried in this oil first before tasting it. A bite or two couldn't do harm anyway. People put far worse things in their mouths all the time. :Q

There's an old man in Kentucky who can answer that question for you. He was using transformer oil (yes, the kind with PCBs) for cooking as it cooked food well and never went bad.

I would never consider using Askerol to cook food that was to be eaten though.
