I noticed that some advertisers were able to track me even though I use Centurion's "Drive Shield" and different IP locations.

Only when I changed my computer name did the ads stop following me across different physical library/IP locations.

Apparently there are many ways to track and a system could simply implement several methodologies simultaneously.

According to Larry Piland (All About Computers - KFMB760 radio talk show), if your on the networks, then assume no anonymity.

I use incognito mode which stops this.

Actually, Chrome Incognito mode doesn't prevent this tracking (nor does FireFox Private mode). This Link shows a discussion over on Chromium where the ETag passes information between multiple Incognito sessions, and between Incognito and Non-Incognito sessions.\

Here's a Discussion for those using FireFox.

I just used private browsing mode and my text stored on that site disappeared. So privet browsing does work. But I'm baffled at the difference between private browsing and my settings prior where I had cookies and cache deleted on Firefox exit and the text still showed up! I used private browsing and the text was gone.

I'm using Firefox 19. Will try with other versions and report back.

Okay, I just tested FF 22 and it stores the text even in private browsing mode. But after two restarts it clears. The same thing happens in FF 19. This is very disconcerting! What's the cure?

So I tried the addon Secretagent that is suggested in the link the OP provided. You have to turn off all features except Etag otherwise you can't log into a forum. But http://lucb1e.com/rp/cookielesscookies still sees you visited the site, but storing text is not there. I even tried different IP addresses.

Thanks, i will have to test it out also. Let us know if you encounter any other issues with the secretagent addon.

Okay, on another forum I'm a member of I had to whitelist the site because pictures and avatars weren't showing up. Which means it will accept ETags when whitelisted.

I'm curious how my banking site knows whether or not my computer has ever accessed that site before. It seems to know, regardless of inprivate browsing mode in IE or not. I can't imagine it's using using cookies, because if I clear my cookies, it still recognizes me. It also doesn't work by IP address, as it doesn't prompt me as a new user, just because my IP changes.
