I've heard that you shouldn't leave cooked tomato sauce (or pasta sauce with tomatoes) in a metal container in a fridge because it can cause botulism.

True? Is it a serious no-no, or just something that 'could' cause it but most likely won't if you eat up the food in a few days. Thoughts? I've always made pasta and put it in tupperware, but sometimes I leave it in the pan over night..

Tomato acid is not good for certain metals and can ruin the taste at least, if stored overnight.

Botulism is caused by a certian bacteria that likes anaerobic conditions.
It being metal is not so much as issue as if it was air tight and left to sit forever if the bacteria is already there.
I would suggest just cooking the sauce to the point where all that fun stuff gets killed.

Oh and this is the real reason not to. :p

It's not dangerous, botulism isn't a hazard. The high acid content of tomatoes makes them react badly to certain kinds of metal, they'll discolor and pick up a very metallic flavor. When doing tomatoes stick with glass, ceramic, stainless or enamel pots/pans. Aluminum, copper and cast iron are bad.
