My dad thinks is extremely stubborn about getting me a new car. Now, I am perfectly happy with any car, but he has a $12,000 limit and he wants to get me a used toyota camry. I am trying to explain that I can get a much better car for that kind of money. He won't listen to me and insists that a 4 cylinder engine is easier to fix and has less problems than a 6 cylinder engine. The car that I wouldn't mind getting is a 1997 Infinity I30 which is around $10,000-12,000, but he won't budge. I need some kind of proof to show him that this car won't break down more because of its engine and that it gets good mileage. He won't believe me when I show him the website statistics either.

For one thing it's RWD. Stronger and easier to work on in theory, since there's more room under the hood, and logitudonal drivetrain. I don't see how a V6 engine could possibly be any less reliable than a 4. It's just more car for the money, and a Camry would be a waste of $12,000 in my opinion.

And before anyone flames him for being happy with what he's getting, remember that his/her dad only has a price limit. One $12,000 car is the same price as another $12,000 car, so why not get a better car for the money?

Quit posting, get a job, and buy what you want yourself otherwise thank him for spending 12k on a car for you. I think it should be a new kia/hyundai because of the warranty.

you are lucky to have your dad buy a car for you with $12000. I don't know why you still want a better car. I would say buy a $4000 card and save the $8000 in the bank. if you know anything about finance, do the math and see how much will you have if you just put the $8000 in the bank for 30 years+ with compound interests

If you need some proof, why don't you go to an Infiniti board or use Google? Not many people here do circle jerks to the Camry, unless you are NFS4.

Everyone is so damn bitter. They're gonna spend about 12k no matter what, so why can't he get a little say in what he'll get.

Have you tried bringing him to the dealership and showing him the stickers on both cars with the mileage written on it? Have you been showing him widespread respected websites? Consumer Reports?

Oh, and the I30 is FWD.

The I30 is not RWD, IIRC.

It shares a platform and engine with the Maxima of that year, and the VQ30 engine has been on Ward's 10 Best List for god knows how long. The only thing you should consider is that the I30 will have a lot of electrical goodies that can break over time. I don't understand where your dad is coming from saying that a 4-cylinder is more difficult to work on than a 6 though.

You can also show him this.

Tell your dad that you'll pay repairs when something breaks..

I bought a used 97 Camaro Z28 6speed and repaired it twice since I got it and it has cost me less than $12000. I don't know what the hell your dad is smoking, but $12000 on a used Camry is like spending $8 on a 7-Eleven coffee. A Buick is just as reliable as a Camry and it will cost half as much. Hell, I've seen used BMW's for less money than that.

Camry's are slow. They don't look half bad.. but try telling your dad you want a 5-speed or something. Tell him you enjoy driving too much and want to learn about cars.

Also, just because it's a Camry doesn't mean it won't fall apart and go to sh!t the minute you buy it.

If all else fails, tell your dad you want a pick-up truck. At least you get some utility with your purchase. You can buy a damn nice used truck for $12000.

hey hold on, I'm not complaining about what car I'm getting, and i'm very thankful. Im just sayin if he's gonna spend $10,000 on a car why can't I have some say in it and choose a better car for the money that will have a better resale value. I just can't win against his idiotic logic, and it baffles me how someone as smart as he is can be so stubborn and ignorant when it comes to certain things.

The Camry has ranked number 1 on the Most Stolen List for the past 3 years.

Wrong. 2001, the Integra was the most stolen in the country.
Also 12k is a lot to spend on a car..you can do WAY better than a camry.

You're getting the car for free from your dad. What are you complaining about? Shoot, I would take anything. In fact, if I were your father, I would stop right there and not buy you anything because you sound so ungrateful.

Seriously then why don't you try to talk him into a kia or hyundai? Who cares what the resale value is, you want it to get you through high school/college/whatever without you having to fork out more cash. If you get one, and it does break just take it in and you'll always have a car to drive.

look i'm sorry all you people who don't have money feel bad, but the thing is I'm getting a car because my parents are too lazy to come down to san diego and pick me up everytime i come home from college. I never even asked for a car, they brought it up actually. I'm only saying that if they are going to spend that much money on a damn car at least let it be a decent one that I can sell when I actually get a real job and am out there on my own. Back to the topic, what other cars are there in this price range besides the Camry. I want to show my dad that there are at least more options than the stinkin Camry.

anyhow a v6 would be harder to work on.

only thing to do is point out the extra airbags and say you don't want him to die.
