Convince me to get more ram... :)

So with how cheap the G.Skill 4gb sticks are on Newegg ($34 each? With a Shell Shocker today for $70 matched pair?) I'm itching to get 16 gb instead of the normal 8 for my new build. I know I won't need it and it probably won't be ANY difference in usage but that 16 number is just so tempting when it's so cheap.

Any arguments either for or against?

Well you may limit your overclocking potential, but that's about it

But: If you aren't doing any stuff where you would profit from it (CAD, running half a dozen VMs,..) I could think of better ways to waste 34$ - but then if you can sleep better with it, the amount is negligible anyways

16gb is a lot...

If you need convincing, maybe you could think about what else you could spend it on, maybe something that'd give you a bit more performance...

Maybe an SSD if you don't have one already, or a sturdier case, or a better CPU heatsink...

I bought 16GB of 1600 DDR3 for my HTPC upgrade. That said, I know I will use it as I do video post-processing on the fly, and doing it on HD quality video requires a lot of RAM and a good CPU (both of which I just purchased i7-2600k that Microcenter had for $280). If you see yourself using it, I would say go get it. If not, well, prices should only get cheaper....

Hmmm, not alot cheaper. I think DDR3 is near bottom.

That's why I say buy! You can sell it for more later.

I just upgraded to 12GB from 6GB, and I'm loving it so far

The biggest benefit is that your system cache will now be massive, and Windows 7 x64 will use all of it.
