Convince me to buy an iPod *With Poll*

Should I buy an iPod? I've been taking long trips lately, and borrowing my friends' ipods. I really enjoy them, I have a huge music collection, and it would probably be useful to back up my computer as well.

On the flip side, I'm would be worried about losing it, and It's an awefully expensive purchase for me. Also, there are rumours of a sort of Video-iPod coming out as early as september, but it's possible that it would just be a firmware upgrade. It also may be a good idea to buy another type of music player.

Anyway, what thoughts do you have. iPod users... Overrated? Overpriced? No long lasting value?

Thanks.

i bought an iPod about one year ago and i found myself NEVER using it... i was always too busy with school and work. and if i was going to listen to mp3s, i would listen to them on my good sound system. they aren't overrated, they are rated just right, actually... and the price is steep, but if you think you'll get good use out of it, then i say go for it. you can't get a better mp3 player, honestly :) i haven't used irivers, or zens, or anything else though.

I don't have a good sound system, but I do have some nice sennheiser headphones.

I just bought a shuffle 512 mb, and I am in love with it. Right now I've got a 20 hour audio book and 70 songs on there. FIgure 120 songs without the book. By no means my whole collection but more than enough for any one time.

Itunes makes it easy enough to reload with random music or create custom playlists. And its cheap, so if I lose it I would cry only for 1 day instead of a week if I had bought a 200$+ player.

Yay:

- Large music storage capacity
- Color screen
- Fashionable

Nay:

- Battery life _SUCKS_.
- Interface is actually a bit difficult to use when running or exercising.
- The silver back retains fingerprint oils like no other.
- Need to buy a case to protect from scratches.
- iTunes software BLOWS ANUS. Shame on Apple for such bad software.
- Overpriced.
- Kids are being killed for their iPods.
- It's a bit big to be convenient, Mini iPods are right size but smaller music capacity/battery life.

lol thats not that big of a collection.
There are plenty of other brands out there. If your mp3s arent of steller quality, then it doesnt really matter what player you buy.

the zen touch is better than the ipod. the only downside to it is a tad larger than the ipod and it doesn't have lossless support right now. battery life is 24 hours if i remember correctly.

Well, definitely on long trips, but also when exersizing, to back up my computer when I reformat, and just general lounging about.

as for "- Battery life _SUCKS_.", my friend's iPod has a battery life of like 12 hours playing, and it's an old gen 1. Considering I spend so much time in front of my computer anyway, I don't think that I'll need insane battery life.

And I kinda like the iTunes software. Not as good as winamp, which I use to listen to music on my computer, but a hell of a lot better than WMP or Real, imo.

As for "- Kids are being killed for their iPods." :Q, but I'm 6'1"/180 and still growing. Also, where I live things are pretty tame, so I'm not too worried. Unlike other people, I wouldn't flaunt it, either... I want it for function, not fashion.

the batteries for some ipods sucked becasue they were manufacted defects. apple sent everyone that recieved those 50 giftcards to buy a new battery.

<----- likes my creative muvo txfm 512 mb. I could never carry 5 gigs of music on me and the flash drive is very useful

I like the battery life on my mini... plus I got the griffin car charger and itrip so that makes it moot... if you want to take all your music with you you would have to get a 20gig and then use less than half... get a 6 gig mini and dont load up all your music...

I personally really like iTunes... (up until about 6 months ago I was a hardcore media player 10 user...) the search is great, it interfaces with the music store seamlessly and all in all is a good piece of SW

The price isn't that ridiculous... if you are a student (or claim to be) you can get the ipods for I think either $20 off or 10%... I got the 4 gig mini which bases at $200 so %10 is $20... plus the shipping is free and fast, plus you can get it laser engraved for free now... not sure how much of a selling point that is for you...

I say get it...

If you're going to be working out with it, then you should really get a flash player. the HDD players don't work the greatest while they're being jostled around.

Since I'm lame, most of the working out I do is running on a treadmill in a nice airconditioned room + some weight lifting & yoga, so it's easy to keep it from jostling. I don't really work out that much anyway, so that's not the hugest priority.

If you mean traveling on airplanes, I have a shuffle and love it. Long battery life, small and light for trips, and I don't have to worry about having it tossed around in my bag. Also helpful to have a flashdrive if you need it.

iPod is too trendy, get a Creative Nomad, I sell quite a few of those and people love them. For $40 less you can get 3 times the storage and just about the same size, and a replaceable battery!

Wondering if you have ever actually used a hdd player at the gym?

I use a 6 gig mini at the gym and I run, weight train, bike etc on a given day. Never noticed anything wrong yet.

As well I run with my girlfriend in the nearby park and I bought her a 40 gig click wheel, and I've never heard her complain about any skipping either when we run.

I'm a big fan of the new mini ipod with the 18 hour battery. I have a car changer, a charger for home and one at work, I have never even come close to running it out.

Good buys:
Ipods
Creative products; zen, zenmicro etc.
Bad buys:
I RIVER (I hate these, so many problems)
RIO - again lots o problems

Oh and if you dont like itunes, google fpod, good software too.
