Convince me that space travel/NASA is beneficial to us..

I'm probably like the rest of the ignorant Americans out there in that I'm pretty indifferent to all this news about NASA and space discovery stuff..though the amount of money spent on it seems to be an eye-opener at least for what they do.

On the other hand the government would probably spend/waste that money on something that doesn't benefit me at all either, at least with NASA I can get some pretty pictures..

Search the multitude of other threads on why space exploration is beneficial to society as a whole. Or research yourself. You can start with all the inventions that have come as a result of NASA and space exploration.

The government is a black hole. NASA is also a black hole in a lot of ways, but it still beats $5000 hammers and government employees making the taxpayers pay for their plasma TVs.

<old jewish man> You don't think they really spend $5000 on a hammer do you? </old jewish man>

I think its worth it just because learning the mysteries of what else is out there is freaking cool. There are probably better ways to spend money, but I think space travel is romantic from the point of view of the pioneer roots of the US. We are bold explorers into new territory. Hope the Native Aliens don't get wiped out/displaced this time 😛

religous nut? Seems more like environmentalist 😛

In the 1960's, when tons of government money was being put into NASA, economists have calculated that for every $1 going into NASA, $3 comes out in terms of technological benefits to the economy and society.

a few:
- microchips
- better insulation
- solar power
- better batteries
- better food preservation

Same thing, different god.

NASA signs my paycheck.

/thread

Also, you have no idea how much hard work and ingenuity goes in to the projects that NASA undertakes. I consider it to be a better investment than most if not all weapons platforms and spreading democracy around the world.

meh it's a government agency - it's a waste. There are reasons for the $5k hammers, but not good ones.

Ah but the environment is real.

Because space is cool, and these are all steps towards me being able to eventually own a Millenium Falcon.

what about the money spent on the military? at least space travel results in beneficial, rather than detrimental, advances in technology.

Ah but the environment is real.

Worshipping the environment is exactly the same as worshipping a man in the sky. The dangerous part about environmentalism is that it wears the disguise of science, because it leverages many of the effects noticed by science, and some of the conclusions reached by environmentalism can also be reached rationally, but environmentalism, as expressed by the environmental fundamentalists is nothing more than worship of "natural" processes that have been annointed by the group.

Yes reducing emissions is good, yes, the ozone layer is important. No, humans are not evil for affecting the environment.

P.S. If you want to discuss this, we should probably start another topic, since it's not really applicable to this thread.
