i am looking to sell my desktop (specs not in sig) and my 233mhz sony vaio 505ts laptop. the money from those will be combined and used in conjunction with other cash to buy...

Apple Powerbook 12"

or

Dell Inspiron 600m

Right now, when I use my computer, I browse the internet, check email, do powerpoint, use word, use AIM, listen to mp3s, and thats about it. i use my xbox to game. i am taking a video production class in school next semester, so i may do a little editing (iMovie in school), but that's not a big deal. i may start doing some digital still photos, too.

what do you suggest, and most of all why?

Why? Because I hate Macs. :p

Unless you have a huge investment in software, you could go either way. For all the things you seem to want to do, OSX+Office has everything you need.

I imagine the Dell is cheaper. If you're not gonna do anything fancy and the Dell will do all of it, why would you want to pay more for the mac?

Why is this even a question??? Unless you have a need for a Mac, (and you'll know about that need if it exists), a PC is currently a better choice. Cost, software, etc. All favor PC based machines.

So unless you really love Macs, or need to use a software package that's only available for Macs, there's no question.

And no, I don't hate Macs. I'd like to see them become more common. Great machines. But overpriced, which limits their usefulness in my life.

The powerbook is smaller, lighter, has better battery life, firewire (good for your video editing), and IMO, a better OS.

Both machines will do all the stuff you've listed that you do right now. The powerbook has the portability edge, and is the only one that will let you use iMovie in the future. The powerbook is a little more money, but not much.

Also, the powerbook has the advantage of being immune to Xupiter, Gator, etc, which you don't really appriciate until you go back form using the mac to using a windows machine and having to be diligent about clicking "no" when websites try to install that crap.

If you do get into digital image editing, you can buy another LCD and plug it into the powerbook and have a dual monitor setup. I don't beleive that's possible on the dell.

I personally would go for the Dell, but it's your choice. Do you like Macs or PCs better? Which one suits your needs better? And so on....
