Convince me: Lilo or GRUB?

I'm about to install Slackware 8.0 on one of my systems and I was wondering which bootloader I should use. So far I've been using Lilo exclusively, but I've heard a lot of good things about GRUB.

Any insights?

Always a good argument 😛

Its the only good one I can come up with. I dont dualboot so it doesnt matter much to me. 😉

You lazy m0nkey 😀

I don't dualboot either, but apparently, GRUB is much more failsafe than LILO, or so I heard.

My 1 linux machine goes down on VERY rare occassions. So Ive never had to worry about things like that. On occassion I throw a new kernel on the system, but I dont do it that often.

Hmm... so if you just keep the thing running 24/7, it doesn't matter anyway? Sounds fair enough 🙂

I don't reboot most of my systems that often, actually, since some of them run simulations, others function as server and I'm way too lazy to keep rebooting my desktop PC 😛

I run eccP on my machines for team anandtech. Since I rarely sit at the machines to use them, 99% of thier processing power goes to eccP. My machines are down right now, until I get a chance to move them..

Just what I wanted to write 🙂 I have used lilo for years and it has always served me right. And I do change kernels sometimes as often as socks 🙂 Don't fix it it it's not broken....

I better won't ask how often that is 😛

Well new kernels usually come out every month or two... 😛

fairly standard sock changing schedule 😀

i use lilo, used grub for about 5 seconds, so i cant really knock it or praise it. i've heard it does something better than lilo, just dont remember what, and really i dont care, lilo has been working fine for me, plus most people use it so its alot easier to get support for for us noobs

Hmm.... unless someone tells me why I should use GRUB and gives a compelling reason, Lilo it is. Thanks for the help and insights in the clothing behaviour of the average geek 😀

Grub understands filesystems, no need to run it to update it bootmap after editing it's config file. When you need to type in the path to a kernel (say you made a type-o in the config file) it's got tab completion, it's also got tab completion in other places where it makes sense. It's a little more confusing to setup than lilo (especially if you have a seperate /boot partition) but it's very convenient, especially after you've used similar "smart" boot loaders like aboot on Alpha.

Thank you, Nothinman 🙂 that was the kind of reply I had been hoping for.

Hmm... since it won't matter how many times I screw up the installation anyway, I can just as well try GRUB on this one machine 😀
