Converting Word files to Ascii?

My wife works part time for a company that transcribes court tapes onto paper. They have her using PC-Write, which is a Dos-based program. For numerous reasons, she would rather use Microsoft Word. The problem is, when she saves the file, it must be saved as a Hard Ascii file. I have no clue what this is, and haven't been able to dig anything up explaining how to do that.

She knows that other people use word and convert the files, so we know it can be done somehow.

Ideas?

ASCII is just the standard for english letters. I believe it is 8bits so the standard is limited to only represent 256 characters.
