Hi,
I have a lot of videocamera tapes, the 8 mm type. They are old, and it is known that magnetic tape degrades over time and usage. So the most common remedy is to digitize the video by converting it to digital form and storing it in your computer, and then editing them and all that.
I am looking at the purchase of a video card, possibly an ATI All in wonder 9600 XT. Oh, and regarding this card, it seems good for the price. I am looking at this card mainly because of the fact that it has a lot of inputs (RCA type composite video in and many others). I believe it is also okay for games. BUt it does have a lot of input and output options. I think there are other value priced ATI All in wonder cards, which I might also go for.
Anyways, here is my main question to the video expert. Suppose you have some tapes, and you need to convert them to digital form (Mpeg?) and store and view them on your computer. What is the commoon way, and the most practised way of doing so?
Here is what I am thinking it is, I atke these tapes, put them in a good 8mm video camera player, take an RCA composite video out cable and connect it between the ATI All in wonder card's RCA comopsite video in and the video camera and use some software to encode the analog video into digital mpeg or whatever format I am supposed to convert it into. Is this the most common way?
I have not really trusted those other devices that only do this thing, that is encode the video from an analog source, I do not know why. I think theres one from HP and some other less common brands.
So, what is it? What is the most common method?
