wondering if theres any *Free* software out there to convert divx files to an ipod friendly format.

Also, after converting, will it be limited such that it can only be played on the iPod or will i be able to still play it via WMP with codecs?

thanks

Just use your favorite free video converting software and feed it with the compatible parameters which according to Apple are:

* H.264 video
File formats: .m4v, .mp4 and .mov
Video: Up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3
Audio: AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 KHz, stereo audio

MPEG-4 video
File formats: .m4v, .mp4 and .mov
Video: Up to 2.5 Mbps, 480 x 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile
Audio: AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 KHz, stereo audio

just a followup --

I downloaded the videora ipod converter, and converted one of my videos to H.264 320x280 16:9. The video plays fine in windows media player (minus the fact that video and audio aren't in sync - any fix for that?)

iTunes recongizes and copies the video over fine, however, it will not play on the ipod. It's a 570MB video file, so it takes a few seconds to load up, show up a black screen with the play icon, then just freeze there with the black screen (i can't even adjust the volume) - at this time, no video or audio is playing.

several minutes later, it goes back to the video menu screen.

If said 570 MB movie is shorter than 101 minutes, the bit rate is too high.

As for video-audio-synchronisation, sometimes it's just luck and a second try is the solution. Also try copying the movie from DVD to the HDD before ripping. If that doesn't help either, I'd change the program.
