Converting .MPG --> .AVI or DVD

So I have about 10 .MPG files ranging from 200mb to 800mb and about 3 .AVI files.

I was looking for options as the .mpgs don't seem to play in my Xbox 360 but my .avis do.

What would be the best option for me? Converting .mpg to .avi or converting all to dvd format and creating menu?

What program would I need to convert these videos perfectly and easily without quality loss to dvd format? I have nero

Someone told me to go the .AVI way so I used VirtualDub. I opened a 170mb .MPG then chose save as AVI. The .AVI came out at 7gb.

Can someone help me out on how to go the .AVI way where the file size will be the relative save with no quality loss or an easyt way to make a DVD.

MPG --> AVI = AutoGK
MPG --> DVD = DVD Flick

I use ConvertXtoDVD, but it's not free. DVD Flick should work just fine.

AVI TO MPG = TMPGEnc
MPG TO DVD = TMPGEnc DVD Author

Been using that combo for years. Once in a while some idiot would use the latest codec and I have had to use some other tools to extract the data to the correct format.

DVD/MPG TO AVI = AutoGK
AVI TO WAV = VirtualDub
WAV TO AC3 = ffmpeggui
MKV/AVI TO AVI = MediaCoder (some AVIs are incompatible with TMPGEnc due to codecs; XVID + AVI = BEST)

In addition to these, you need codecs. K-Lite Codec Pack is a good one. I use the very old version. New versions crash TMPGEnc. All I need is a compatible AVI.
