Converting Mpg/Avi movies to VCD HELP!

Hi all,

New to this converting media files. Any help as to which softwares (preferred free wares) would be most easy to use to convert the media to VCD so I can play it on my DVD player.

TIA!

w/ AVI's, can't you just convert it with Nero? Go to "creat a VCD" and use the AVI.

w/ MPEG's, if it's MPEG-1 and 352x240 (NTSC, i think) it's already at VCD spec.

The VCD and DVDR help.com sites are great. However, I eventually found that the easiest thing to do was to just leave them in AVI format and built a home theater PC from spare parts to put in my entertainment center. A cheap old Radeon w/Svideo out provides great picture quality. I watched a friend's 2-CD divx copy of Die Another Day last night and the picture quality was virtually identical to DVD. Plus, I can now listen to my entire MP3 collection on my main stereo over the network rather than have burn them to CDRs.

Thanks all for the fast reply. So, Nero can convert it to VCD. Are there any other softwares that can do the same? Or any freeware that can do it? Thanks again.

It can, but I've never been able to get my DVD player to recognize the discs. :frown:

some sony's can't read burned cd's.

You also may need to burn at 1x. I have been told that burning at a higher rate can cause your DVD player not to recognize a VCD/ SVCD.

Use TMPEG as suggested to convert the AVI to VCD. Then use Nero, select Video CD, drop in the MPG (VCD) file and burn.

1 important thing. Don't burn the cd any faster than 4x. If you burn faster than 4x, you may get problems reading it. Example, if you play it on a DVD player, it may produce artifacts and skip and crap. You'll see. Just burn at 2x or 4x. I have had no problems with 4x.

ok, I managed to convert a mpg file to a VCD using VCD ImageGUI. It's fast and easy.

Now, how do you convert an AVI movies to a VCD? I downloaded VirtualDub V1.4.10 but don't know how to convert it. Can VirtualDub do this? Or do I need to convert AVI movies into Mpeg first?

TIA

That would probably explain it since it's a sony. :frown:

Ok, I downloaded TMPGENC V2.51 but it can't open the AVI movie. I'm getting Illegal stream format error.
