Well my mother has a Nikon camera which takes movie files in .mov or quicktime format.

This is not something that I appreciate as I think that it's better to stick with WMP .avi format files as opposed to being required to use a thrid party application :frown:

Anyway she has been on holiday to India recently and has a huge collection of movies and photos that she wants to transfer to DVD.
We bought a DVD recorder the other week and she makes a real time DVD of her SD card contents by using the AV1 connector on the machine. This is great in some ways as she can convert the .MOV files to the DVD disk in one easy move - other than having to sit there and manually forward each photo and movie file.

Now I thought I would try some software that converts the .MOV files to any format that you choose. I have tested out MOV to AVI MPEG WMV Converter Linked (see bottom of page).

The software does convert the files to different formats but it is not well thought out in my opinion and makes a lot of work out of batch converting files.

The files that it produced are playable in WMP but when I burn then to a CD-R using Nero (data disk) they are not recognised by the DVD player. That goes for the supposed VCD & SVCD tests that I converted to.

So what I'd like to know is do any of you have any tips for converting .mov files to a format that will be playable on a standard DVD player?

You can use Bink to convert the .mov to a raw AVI, then encode in MPEG-2 or whatever format you want.

I tried Bink briefly in the past but the file sizes that it produced were some thing like x10 that of the orginals?

Perhaps I've missed something there though?

Yes... raw AVI's are uncompressed, so yes, they'll be HUGE. Once you make the .mov or ANY other video file into a raw AVI, you can work with it easily to put it in any format you want. WMV, MPEG2, MPEG4, xvid... ANYTHING.

I would also suggest trying to find the appropriate AviSynth plugins. I'm pretty sure there are a few MOV plugins for it. Once you can make an AviSynth script for it pretty much any program should be able to open that.
