Converting LTO-2 External to Internal

So a while back I decided I wanted to try tape backup @ home. I picked up a Dell PowerVault 110t LTO-2 drive on eBay, as well as the SCSI controller card & cables.

I'm working on building a NAS using an nMEDIAPC HTPC 6000B which has 1 external 5.25" bay.

Based on the insides of the LTO-2 external drive, it looks as simple as taking the drive out of the enclosure, attaching power, SCSI, and SCSI ID select. The internal SCSI cable I bought has just two ends, which I'm hoping means some sort of auto-termination.

Do I have this right? The external enclosure fan is loud (old?).

Should work fine! just remember you have to have support for both the scsi controller and the tape drive for the magic to happen! IIRC tape drives were SCSI select 6? for narrow scsi or 8 for wide scsi.

Check the tape drive for auto-termination - it usually is disabled in external units and an external shim is provided to terminate the chain. Make sure your scsi cable is at least 1ft long and has proper termination at the end (obvious)

p.s. make sure you match differential settings. High differential will blow a normal scsi controller. LVD differential is for ultra-wide controllers. Never plug a high differential device into a chain of LVD/Low power differential controllers. smoke!
