Converting laptop panels for PC use?

hey all,

i was considering using a toshiba satelite pro 480CDT laptop display panel for use as a primary or secondary display using the DVI input on my VC, but aprrently you need some sort of lcd controller in between the DVI interface and the panels 16 pin connector?

Does anyone here know of anyone who has successfully converted a LCD panel for use on a PC?

Anyone know where i can get the pinouts or power requirements for this panel?

there are controller cards for LCD screens which cost ~$200. It costs less than a new LCD, so technically his long answer is wrong, but its not practical. do a google search on LCD controller cards and see how much you can get one for. make sure you don't break the ribbon cable.

the Toshiba he has has a 12" LCD. You can get a new 14" LCD from newegg for $189.

... and remember that those "LCD controller" type VGA cards need their BIOS adapted to the particular LCD model you're trying to attach. Also, there are about a zillion different pinouts and electrical standards on the direct, raw LCD connector.

I told you elsewhere already: When you're not a notebook/embedded computer design team, forget it.

In this particular case: DVI uses TMDS signalling and an EDID EEPROM to describe the panel to the VGA card. Current laptop TFTs use LVDS signalling and typically have no EDID, rather using a customized VGA BIOS that contains the panel's description already.

hey all,

i looked into the LCD contoller cards and shalmanese is right, it will probably be cheaper to buy a whole new LCD panel, than to buy a LCD controller card and try to convert it that way.

Would of been a fun project to mess around with, but if it's not finacially viable.......

He means "Would of" should be "Would have"

In English, what the heck does "would of" mean?! NOTHING! The combination doesn't exist! It would, of course, be a mistake in any context.
