Converting internal HD to external HD?

Does a kit exist that allows you to use an internal HD as an external HD? I am very curious about this b/c my brother told me about one. He said it connects via USB or Firewire. If anyone can tell me yay or nay + link I would greatly appreciate it.

The Bytec external enclosures are good, and cheap. Only problem is they are for 5.25" drives, so a little large for a hard drive. That can be a good thing though, since heat often becomes a problem with small enclosures

I've seen these advertised as working with cd-writers as well. Has anyone tried this, and what kind of success have you had? It seems to me superfiially like it might not work as well with cd-writers as hard drives, but I don't really know how the IDE-to-USB is accomplished.

I've got several computers, and absolutely no need for more than one cd-writer.

there are mounting holes on it for 3.5 drives plus a small fan for exhaust. I have the belkin one but choose one that doesn't use the external brick power supply.. ie byteccs or similar.

they're all good, i mean using internal drives (hd/cd/etc) in external cases. i would suggest using the firewire option if you're going to be doing a lot of swapping of data, but usb2 is plenty fast as well, plus i suppose there's more computers out there with usb2 then firewire if you're going to be carrying the thing around.

as for burning though, will probably be fine if you don't push the speeds and use usb2/firewire.

Thanks - one of my PCs has firewire, one has usb2, and the other only usb1. I figure if it works on usb1 at all, I would have to call that a bonus.

it should burn on usb1, i mean they did make usb1 burners back in the day, (even though it was briefly). as long as you're not tryign to do it on a P2 i suppose, and definately don't touch the mouse/keyboard while its going 🙂 hehehe, might want to turn off the screensaver also.

hahaha🙂 One of them is a P2, but as I said, that would be a bonus, and I would probably be abusing burn-proof pretty badly to get it to work.

Maybe with a fresh reboot and disabling antivirus, and, and, and... 😀
