Anyone know of any way to convert a gift card to cash, besides selling it to someone else?

I have a $100 Kohls gift card and could really use the money for something else.

Call the company, say you received it and you simply don't want to use it there. Be very stern, gift cards are a complete joke. I can't believe it's become standardized for gift giving for unimaginative family members and friends.

Why? I hate imaginative gifts. It's almost never what I want and a almost always a complete waste of their time and mine. I always give gift cards. Let them finally get that item they've been wanting but never had the extra money to get.

If you do this, they will laugh at you.

the only gift cards that are appropriate are the plain vanilla visa gift cards. the only problem with those is if you want to put $20 on the card it cost you an additional $5.95 for the card and that definitely decreases sales atleast at the cvs i work at.

Where do you live?

In california retailers are required to cash out gift cards under 10 dollars in value.

At sears I've seen people come in with high value gift cards, break them into multiple low value gift cards, then go to another register and cash them out.

I've done it for at least one person but some of my other managers would balk at having to do it.

Even better, more to complain about. This isn't Guantanamo, gift cards are a joke and companies know it. You aren't signing a contract for them, say you lost the receipt and you want to return it to use somewhere else.

Or.... lie and make something up, whatever. It's not the end of the world.

Heck even expressing that you do not under any circumstances want to purchase something from their company. You'll get the card value back.

I've done this with Best Buy gift cards; informing a manager that CD media was 1/3rd of the price from Newegg for the same stuff they had in their store and I simply did not want to purchase anything from Best Buy and their exuberant prices because at the time online retailers such as New Egg were not price matched.

Money. Give money. Seriously. Be honest in the card, I was going to get you a gift card... so I got you a gift card for the entire country.

why? I hate it when I get a gift card for somewhere I never shop. whats the point? yay I can go to target and spend $20 on something I don't want thanks. I would prefer cash/check to a gift card any day and anyone that thinks it's tacky is a moron. I mean really it's not like you're putting any thought into the gift.

gifts are completely corporate. Get together, have fun, and call it a day. No need to feed the middle man.

Yeah I'll probably end up ebaying it, but I'll have to sell it for $90 and pay about $10 in ebay/paypal/mailing fees on top of that. So I'll end up getting about 80% of its value. Oh well.
CL for cash. hell u could prob meet them at the local Kohls

It's no more tacky than a Gift Card

The problem is when exchanging Gifts I find gift cards and money to be completely a waste of time.

Say you and your brother are exchanging Gifts. Oh I see lets give him 50 bucks cash and he gets you the same thing.

What was accomplished here?

Absolutely Nothing.

The same thing happens with gift cards. Lets say your dad gets you 50 bucks at best buy and you get him the same thing. It is a complete and utter waste of time.

Any situation it is not tacky to give a gift card it is also not tacky to give money and money is always the better choice. IE handing it out to grandkids, nieces and nephews, weddings. And these are situations where gifts are not exchanged.

Anywhere you are exchanging gifts I find a gift cards and money to a complete waste of time. IMO take some time into actually finding out what the other person will enjoy or don't give a gift at all.

I agree. Ideally the whole concept would be abolished.

I agree with this more than the notion that "a gift card is a good gift"
