Converting Fat32 to NTFS

I'm currently running the convert command in win xp pro and it told me it would have to unmount my hdd in order to convert it. This is a secondary hard drive so I clicked ok and it says it's converting. I then noticed that it looks like it closed down explorer. My start menu isn't there but all my other programs are still running just fine. How long does this process normally take?

120 gig hdd which was fragmented somewhat.

I do but it's not really flashing. Just flashes every once in awhile but that could be because I have some other processes still running
What should I try next?

If convert says it's still running, I would just wait.

Update:
Ok that was weird. The screen finally blanked and wouldn't come back up. So I gave up and rebooted my machine and it says my D Drive is now NTFS
ran scandisk and it came up fine and all my files were there as well

Weird.
