which format delivers the best overal quality, speed, compatibility, etc: divx, vcd, or any there any other formats I missed?

go with divx. sometimes the best rips look perfect. most times the audio quality sucks but the video is whats important.

I've been playing with Open Divx I think v.4.08a. I'm impressed with the color and picture clarity over Divx 3.22, but it's missing low and fast motion versions, and I can't merge a high bitrate with a low bitrate in Make Film TNG, or Avi Revolution (for Variable Bit Rate). I'm under the impression that this codec does the VBR itself, but haven't found much info on it.

Yikes, just encoded a whole movie with OpenDivx, and got horrible results; very frequent frame freezes, lost audio sync, and speed of video fluctuations.... very dissappointing. Discovering how to use WMA (64KBPS)for audio was nice though.
