converting dvd

The kid who made that program is in jail right now.... I dont think you would want to ask something like that on this board.

It is not illegal, it's taboo. Under certain conditions it is legal to reproduce dvd content. If you want information on this topic put "divx" in a search engine and stear clear of anything related to the circuit city disks.

in his case its illegal...if he wanted to start a dvd collection why cant he just buy the dvds? obviously this is for a quick rental and encode to divx.

You might want to edit your post kaiotes.....if you don't, you probably won't be around here much longer. The mods do not allow this type of stuff here, and you will more than likely be banned for it unless you edit really quick.

Question regaurding this topic?

It is perfectly legal to rent a VHS movie and copy it for YOUR OWN PERSONAL USE! Why not DVD?

BTW I am NOT looking for a way to copy DVD's just Wondering the difference.

If you own a copy of a CD (music or other wise), VHS tape or DVD it is perfectly legal to make a copy for yourself...it is called "fair use" (I have had many disucssions with attorneys at my office about this). When you start renting DVDs (or anything else for that matter) and copying them you will run into trouble.

I can think of at least one instance where I copied my R-rated VHS tape to another to edit out some scenes and swear words that were not suitable for certain family members.

Is this legal and/or possible to do with DVD to VHS? (I have not tried this but I assume VideoCard "out" to VHS "in".)

You can use a program called Clad DeCSS, or Smart Ripper.

The way the question is phraised doesn't imply any illegal activity. Good thing you guys aren't cops.

From reading through the entire thread, it appears the question was orignally posted quite differently.

No, backing up your own (owned/purchased) software (including movies, audio, etc) is not illegal and actually practical. As I understand it, you may make a personal copy of rented movies (etc.) only during the rental period.

The young man and his father (Nordic country, I think) did face criminal charges for creating and distributing DeCSS - has that gone to trial yet?
