I've got a Zune and a Dell Axim x51v that I'd like to be able to play some DVD outputs on.

What's the best software for doing the conversions?

For iPod - which is mentioned in the title, but not in the body of the post - I like Handbrake:
http://handbrake.m0k.org/
Open-source, GPL, free, and does DVD to iPod and iPhone with just a couple of clicks and the quality is excellent.

But I don't own a Zune or a Axim, so I can't help with those.

Yeah, Handbrake is good. Though the Windows version is pretty sucky compared to the Mac.

For Windows I use DVDFab to send DVDs to iPod or PDA formats. There's plenty of other converters...Videora is for Windows now too IIRC.
