For those that convert avi's to smaller file sizes, what program do you use and what format is best?

I have some avi files that i need to convert but the only program i've ever used is Windows Movie Maker. I'd like to try something different. A quick search on google shows me countless file formats and tons fo different programs. I would just like something that is easy to use and produceds good quality results.

I'm just curious what you use?
Thanks.

AVI is just a container format, the important bits are the codecs used to compress the audio and video in the avi.

The odds are the .avi files are already compressed, and you're unlikely to shrink them more w/o a loss of quality.

Thanks for the replies so far. The videos I'm talking about were recorded by my Canon S3 camera. The file sizes are huge. Something like 1 GB per ~6 minutes of video. I have used WMM to convert them to WMV's and they still retained a good bit of quality but were extremely small. Something like ~100 MB --> 4MB (IIRC). I just wnated something that will keep a bit more quality and I have read about xvid and divx so I figured that would be a good starting point.

Radicl - What program(s) do you use?

or install virtualdub and use it to recompress your AVI file.
just make sure to select the xvid codec in the video section (you'll need xvid installed of course).
