Converting an audio book I purchased to be playable on an iPod?

I bought an audio book which came on several CDs. I'm wondering how would I go about getting it to play on my iPod? It's several CDs and my iPod only has 4GB of space so I don't think just ripping and putting all the CDs onto my iPod would work. I'm guessing there is some type of encoding program that I'd have to get and use. Can someone lead me in the right direction?

Maybe try to encode it super low bitrate in Mono ? I have converted some O&A and Stern Shows this way awhile back, and they were fairly small afterwards. Approx 40-50mb for about 4 hrs audio I believe.

insert CD into cd drive
open iTunes
Click the little "import" icon in the top right corner of the window. This will convert your CD to AAC or MP3 (depending on your settings in iTunes). Each CD wil ltake up roughly 65mb of space.
Sync your iPod with your new iTunes library. This will copy your new files onto the iPod.

Rip the CDs into mp3s. Since it's only voice you can use a fairly low bit rate and it will still sound decent.
