Converting 2000/XP to Server Editions?

The general rule of thumb is other than the microsoft compatibility for upgrades table is, client to client and server to server. I know there's a way to trick 2k pro and xp pro's alike to thinking they're a server. This is required so I can upgrade to any of the win2k3 server editions. Yes, I'm too lazy to clean install because.... it's too much time and effort. If anyone knows how to do this or knows where I can obtain a tutorial or guide, it would be greatly appreciated. (Don't be a smart ass and say google.com)
 
Yes, and that goes without saying for any OS. But I'm not doing any serving on this, what I'm going to do is do the whole msfn.org thing and convert it to a client just about. I just prefer 2k3 server over win2k now that I've gone and back again.
 
i dont get why people use a server OS to be used as a client OS. Server is only meant for Server. if you change the server to act as a client, your wasting money and time.
 
well for starters, 1 ) you have the potential for a server 2) i get it a whole sale anyhow 3) until you've used it on a regular basis, you will know the difference between 2k, xp, and 2k3 stability and performance. 2k3 combines likewise the best of 2k and xp together without me having to sacrafice much or any security, plus it is software supportive of many RAID formats.
 
Windows 2003 is an awesome OS...even as a client/workstation OS...It has all the features of XP plus some, and it is by far quicker than XP....I'm a CS major at WV Wesleyan, and we get 2003 Pro for free....yay....
 
There used to be a program about called NTswitch. Basically it would change registry settings and turn NT server into workstation.
However, I've never used it, I don't know how effective it is, I don't know where to get it
Try google.
If you find it and decide to use it, then be aware it could completely screw your system.
 
plus you have will have some software compatibility issues running 2k3 server and the reason why 2k3 "feels" faster is because most of the services are turned off. you can easily turn off those same servies in xp.
 
mrmmm nooo i didn't mention anything about 'feeling' faster. must be the other guy. But yes, I know all about services and group policies to tweak. but it is stable.... and plus there's a noticable difference in the way the icons look. quite neat.

no, it doesnt not have all the features of xp. you can't install some software on 2k3 that support xp. it feels quicker because all the eyecandy and services are off. finaly, there's no such thing as 2003 pro.

i have server 2003 installed on another computer and i dont see a difference in icons.... specify what icons are you're talking about.
 
I cant' really tell you which ones in specific, because frankily I can seea noticable difference (possibly eyecandy) in all the icons. Anything from ZA to Kazaa. The only software I came across that didn't work right on 2k3 was the Kerio Personal Firewall (which the USAF uses on their non critical systems), and under high port scan, the Sygate FW GFP's itself. Other than that, no matter what software I put on, no matter how bitchy they get.... it runs and runs fairly well.

2kpro -> 2k server (fine) -> upgrade to win2k3 server (good)! 😀

now i got curious and retarded, and decided to see what win2k3 server would do if i tricked it into a workstation... it started up as Windows XP Professional. lol, but now I can't login due to activation requirements. Looks like it's format time for me after all...

LOL. Did you call MS and ask them how to activate "Windows 2003 Workstation"? Did they do a double-take? 🙂

if u've ever reverse engineered an AUP, then you'll know attempting to modify or change the original product other than it's intent and design in certain ways to affect licensing is illegal.
 
Hacking XP or 2000 Pro so you can install a 2003 Server upgrade install over top of it is against the 2003 EULA. To sum things up:
A. Dont do it.
B. Dont post about it here.
if your upgrading to a server OS, you should really do a clean install.

Generally speaking XP is going to be more secure than 2K3 server; the extra services running on the Server OS just increases your surface for attack.

BTW software RAID sucks.

You dont "get it for free" read the EULA. You only get to use it for development/educational purposes; this license does not give you "free rain to do whatever you want."

Reverse engineering it for any purpose (yes including any way affecting licensing) is illegal.
