Is there any free software out there that will allow me to scan a document and convert it into word/excel and allow editing?

I've never heard of something that does this. It seems possible, but it would be a nightmare to code... almost as bad as handwriting recognition. Would probably make just as many errors too.

It's more commonly known as OCR (optical character recognition), and they're pretty popular, my first scanner came with some OCR software, and it worked suprisingly well.

Just stumbled across this:

http://www.simpleocr.com/

But yeah, just google "OCR" if you want to research more.

If it works well for you, post in the Freeware thread in this Forum so others can find out about it, since I've never used it myself.

It didn't work out too well :(

Although I did find out there is one built into the microsoft office suite which works pretty well.
